Chapter 7 - The Public Execution

Within five minutes of the interview ending, Aegis Innovations and Whitmore Industries released a combined media statement. It wasn't a standard text apology. It was a digital archive link sent directly to every news outlet, journalist, and social media platform in the country.

The package contained three items.

First, the complete, unedited security footage from the hospital maternity suite. The video showed Vivian slamming the door, screaming at me about money, and then clearly striking my face while I held my twenty-minute-old daughter. It also showed Ethan completely ignoring the assault, his eyes locked onto his glowing phone screen.

Second, the system logs from the game server. It showed Ethan's user account, Caldwell_King, actively playing a ranked match at the exact timestamp of his daughter’s birth and his mother’s assault. It even included his in-game chat messages sent during the incident, where he typed to his teammates: "Hold on, my wife is crying about something, let me finish this match first."

Third, the certified financial audit showing that Ethan had embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from his employees' salary fund to buy virtual game gold and skins, proving his financial ruin was caused by his own addiction and greed, not a corporate takeover.

The internet exploded.

The story shifted from a "Billionaire's Trap" to The Ultimate Gamer Husband Disgrace. Within two hours, the hashtag #GameOverEthan was trending worldwide. The public sympathy Vivian had tried to build dissolved instantly, replaced by a wave of global disgust.

The television network that had aired the interview immediately issued a public apology, deleting the segment from their platforms and releasing a statement condemning domestic violence and child neglect.

The next morning, Ethan and Vivian’s small apartment was surrounded by paparazzi, but not for interviews. They were shouting questions through the windows: "Ethan, how does it feel to lose a company for a mobile game?" "Vivian, are you going to jail for assault?"

Inside the apartment, the air was heavy. Vivian was shaking, watching the television screen show her face with the word ABUSER written in large red letters underneath.

"This can't be happening," she muttered, her hands pulling at her hair. "How did they get those server logs? How did they know?"

Ethan was sitting on the floor, staring at his hands. He didn't even have a phone anymore; he couldn't face the millions of hate messages waiting for him online.

"It's over, Mom," Ethan said, his voice completely dead. "We didn't just lose the case. We lost everything. Nobody will ever hire me. Nobody will ever look at me without laughing."

Just then, the phone rang. It wasn't a friend. It was the police department.

"Vivian Caldwell?" the officer's voice was official. "We have an active warrant for your arrest regarding the assault charge filed by Emma Whitmore. Please remain at your location. Officers are on their way."

Vivian dropped the phone, looking at her son in pure terror. But Ethan didn't move to comfort her. He just closed his eyes, wishing he could restart his life like a failed game, realizing too late that in reality, there are no extra lives.
