Chapter 2 - The Silent Poison

The gun nearly slipped from my hand. The world seemed to tilt on its axis.
"Poisoned?" I choked out, the word tasting like ash in my mouth. "Matteo was born with a congenital heart defect. The best cardiologists in the country confirmed it—"
"The best cardiologists in the country were reading lab reports generated by St. Jude’s Private Clinic," Elena interrupted, taking a small step toward the desk. "A clinic heavily funded by the Moretti Foundation, managed directly by your cousin, Julian Moretti."
My mind raced through the past three years. Julian. My second-in-command. The man who sat at my right hand during every commission meeting, the man who had wept openly at Sofia’s funeral and swore on his mother's grave to help me raise Matteo.
I snatched the envelope from the desk, tore open the thick wax seal with my thumb, and pulled out three folded pages. Sofia's distinct perfume—jasmine and rain—faintly drifted into the room, hitting me like a physical punch.
My dearest Luca, the letter began.
If you are reading this, it means I am gone, and our sweet Matteo is fading. It means you have spent months raging against the world, spending millions on doctors who cannot find the cure, because they are looking for a disease that God did not create.
I found the vials in Julian’s private study at the estate three weeks ago. It is a rare synthetic toxin called Rhodesian Glycoside—odorless, tasteless, and completely undetectable in standard blood panels. It mimics end-stage hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. He has been administering it to Matteo in microscopic doses through his daily vitamin supplements since he was six months old.
Why? Because Julian knows you will burn the world down for our son. He knows that as long as Matteo is dying, your focus is divided, your empire is vulnerable, and your heart is broken. He wants you to surrender the syndicate leadership to him so you can spend Matteo’s 'final days' by his side.
Luca, my love, do not kill Julian yet. If you kill him now, you will never get the antidote. He keeps the neutralizing enzyme locked in a cold-storage vault beneath the dockyards in Sector 4.
Elena is my sister's daughter—my niece, whom I raised in secret before I met you. Trust her. She knows how to synthesize the temporary stabilizer using the red velvet cake recipe, which contains the only natural herbal binding agent capable of slowing the glycoside's destruction.
Save our boy, Luca. Then finish what they started.
Forever yours, Sofia.
Tears scorched my eyes, spilling onto the ivory paper, smudging the ink over her signature. The rage that erupted inside me was not the hot, reckless fury of a mob boss; it was the icy, absolute conviction of a father who had been given a second chance to save his child.
I folded the letter carefully and placed it inside my jacket pocket, right over my heart. I lowered the gun and holstered it.
I looked at Elena. "You're Sofia's niece."
"My mother was her older half-sister," Elena confirmed, her eyes glistening with suppressed emotion. "Aunt Sofia kept me hidden in Italy to protect me from the syndicate wars. When she realized Julian was moving against her, she contacted me, gave me the locket, the recipe, and the instructions. I’ve been training as a research toxicologist in Zurich for two years, waiting for the right moment to enter this house."
"Why didn't you tell me two years ago?!" I roared, slamming my fist onto the mahogany desk, splitting the polished wood down the center. "We could have stopped this before Sofia died!"
"Because Julian had guards on Sofia twenty-four hours a day!" Elena shouted back, her voice finally breaking. "She knew that if she told you without hard proof, a war would break out in the streets of Chicago, and Julian would have killed Matteo immediately to eliminate the heir! She sacrificed herself, Luca! She let them kill her so Julian would think he had won, giving us time to find the antidote!"
I stared at her, the horrific, brilliant selflessness of my wife's final act washing over me like a tidal wave. Sofia hadn't been an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire. She had been a tactical commander playing the long game to save our son.
"Where is the neutralizing enzyme?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet.
May you like
"Sector 4, Vault 12," Elena replied. "But Julian has biometric locks on the vault. The timer resets every seventy-two hours. If we breach it incorrectly, a thermite charge inside will destroy the entire supply."
"Then we don't breach it incorrectly," I said, walking toward the door. "We make Julian open it for us."
