Chapter 9 - The Miracle

The black Cadillac tore through the streets of Chicago at ninety miles an hour, escorting the unmarked state police van with sirens wailing against the quiet night air.

We arrived at the Moretti estate at 2342 hours—eighteen minutes before the midnight deadline.

I burst through the front doors, my torn coat covered in dust and dried blood, holding the padded cryo-container like a sacred relic. I sprinted up the grand staircase, past the shocked guards, and threw open the door to Matteo’s room.

Elena was sitting beside the bed, holding Matteo’s small, ice-cold hand. The heart monitor beside the bed was emitting a slow, erratic BEEP... BEEP... BEEP...—his pulse dropping below forty beats per minute. His skin had turned a terrifying shade of blue-gray.

"Luca!" Elena gasped, springing to her feet.

"I have it!" I panted, dropping to my knees beside the bed and opening the cryo-container.

Elena didn't waste a single second asking questions. She pulled a sterile intravenous syringe from her medical kit, drew the clear blue enzyme from the glass vial, and purged the air bubbles with a quick tap of her finger.

She looked at me, her eyes filled with terrifying urgency. "His heart is entering final bradycardia, Luca. Hold his arm steady."

I grabbed Matteo’s tiny, fragile forearm, kissing his cold forehead. "Hold on, baby boy. Daddy's here. Mommy's here. Hold on..."

Elena carefully inserted the needle into the IV line running into his tiny vein and slowly pushed the plunger down.

The bright blue liquid vanished into his bloodstream.

For ten agonizing seconds, nothing happened. The heart monitor’s line flattened into a terrifying, continuous tone—EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE—

"NO!" I roared, throwing my body over my son, pressing my hands against his tiny chest. "MATTEO! NO! DON'T YOU LEAVE ME!"

Elena grabbed the portable defibrillator paddles, charged them with a high-pitched whine, and placed them gently on his chest. "CLEAR!"

THUMP!

Matteo’s tiny body bounced off the mattress.

The monitor remained flat.

"CHARGING AGAIN! CLEAR!"

THUMP!

Silence filled the room. The wind rustled the leaves of the Japanese maple tree outside the open window.

And then...

BEEP.

BEEP.

BEEP... BEEP... BEEP...

The jagged green line on the heart monitor surged back to life, spiking into a healthy, rhythmic sixty beats per minute!

Color flooded back into Matteo’s cheeks like a rising tide of life. His eyelids fluttered, his chest expanding in a deep, clean, wonderful breath of air.

He slowly opened his dark brown eyes—the exact same eyes as his mother—and looked up at my face.

"Daddy...?" he whispered softly, his voice clear and free of the hoarse gasp that had haunted his breathing for months.

Tears burst from my eyes, washing away the blood and dirt on my face. I scooped my son into my arms, holding him so tight against my chest that I could feel every single beat of his newly restored, vibrant heart pounding against my own.

"I'm here, sweetie," I sobbed, kissing his face, his hair, his hands. "Daddy's here. You're safe now. You're completely safe."

Elena sank onto the floor beside the bed, covering her mouth with both hands, weeping tears of pure, overwhelming joy as she watched the miracle unfold.
