Chapter 4 - The Counter-Toxin

While the syndicate prepared for the transition of power, Elena was working feverishly in a makeshift laboratory set up in the estate's wine cellar.

Test tubes, centrifuges, and digital monitors lined the mahogany racks that once held rare vintages. Elena, wearing a white lab coat over her black dress, carefully drew a small vial of red liquid from a heated beaker and mixed it with a drop of Matteo’s blood on a glass slide.

I stood beside her, watching through the microscope eyepiece.

"Look," Elena pointed to the screen connected to the microscope.

The malformed, rigid red blood cells that had been suffocating Matteo’s heart tissues were slowly uncurling, returning to their natural, flexible shape as the compound from the red velvet cake hit them.

"The natural alkaloid in the wild hibiscus extract—the secret ingredient in Aunt Sofia's recipe—acts as a temporary competitive inhibitor," Elena explained, her fingers flying across her keyboard. "It binds to the toxin receptors, preventing the Rhodesian Glycoside from destroying any more cardiac muscle tissue. But it’s only a stall tactic, Luca. It buys us seventy-two hours at most. Without the actual neutralizing enzyme from Vault 12, his organs will begin failing again by Friday."

"He will have the antidote by tomorrow night," I said, watching my son’s blood cells normalize on the screen. "How is he doing right now?"

"He fell asleep an hour ago," Elena smiled gently, her eyes softening. "He asked for another slice of cake before bed. He said he dreamt of his mother standing by a big river, holding a yellow lantern."

My chest tightened. I reached out and touched Elena's shoulder. "Thank you, Elena. For keeping her memory alive. For keeping my boy alive."

She placed her hand over mine. "Sofia was the only person who cared for me when the rest of the world saw me as an illegitimate mistake. I would tear down heaven and hell for her child."

Suddenly, my secure satellite phone vibrated in my pocket. It was Marco.

"Don Luca," Marco’s urgent voice came through the receiver. "We have a problem. Julian just left the estate grounds in an unarmored sedan. He’s heading toward the North Side... toward St. Jude’s Private Clinic."

"Is he alone?" I asked, my voice instantly turning to ice.

"He has two of his personal enforcers with him. And Don Luca... Dr. Pierce just left the hospital through the rear emergency exit carrying a heavy aluminum medical transport case."

My eyes narrowed. Julian was moving the timeline up. He realized that if I brought Elena or another doctor near Matteo after the transition, the toxin might be discovered. He was going to wipe out the remaining evidence—and possibly execute Dr. Pierce to sever the final link.

"Marco, take four men and intercept Dr. Pierce before he leaves the city limits," I ordered. "Do not kill him. Bring him to the abattoir in Sector 2. It’s time Dr. Pierce gave us a full medical consultation."
