Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

The downfall of Harrison Sterling sent shockwaves through the city's financial and social structures. For two weeks, news networks were filled with endless coverage of the "St. Augustine Conspiracy." But inside the high walls of the Voss estate, the chaos of the outside world felt miles away.
Elena was no longer a guest. She was the heart of the household.
She had completely restructured the infants' daily routine. She replaced the rigid, cold scheduling enforced by former high-priced nannies with warm, chaotic, love-filled days. The nursery was constantly filled with music, laughter, and the smell of fresh baby purees that Elena insisted on making herself in the grand kitchen.
Caden, too, was changing.
The cold, distant billionaire who used to work twenty hours a day was now routinely home by 5:00 PM. The staff stared in disbelief as Mr. Voss—the man who had ruined competitors with a single phone call—sat on the living room rug with ties unbuttoned, letting Adrian stack wooden blocks on his head while Luca giggled uncontrollably and Mira snuggled into his chest.
However, peace in the Voss household was short-lived.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, while the triplets were taking their afternoon nap, Elena was sitting in the estate’s grand library, reading through a stack of early childhood education books.
The heavy mahogany doors opened, and Caden walked in. His expression was darker than it had been since the night at the gala.
“Caden?” Elena asked, setting her book down. “What’s wrong? Did something happen with the legal case?”
“Harrison’s legal team is pushing back,” Caden said, walking over to the fireplace and leaning his hands against the mantelpiece. “They can’t beat the DNA evidence, nor can they beat the arson charges. But they are playing a different, dirtier card.”
Elena felt a cold chill run down her spine. “What do you mean?”
“They are questioning your mental stability,” Caden revealed, turning to face her. “They have subpoenaed your medical records from the grief counseling clinic you attended after the delivery. They are arguing that a woman who spent fourteen months believing her children were dead, working as a late-night diner waitress, and undergoing psychological therapy is unfit to share joint custody of the Voss heirs.”
Elena stood up, her cheeks flushing with indignation. “I went to grief counseling because I thought my babies died! Anyone would go to counseling! How can they use my pain—pain they caused—against my fitness as a mother?”
“Because that’s how corporate defense works,” Caden said bitterly. “They take your humanity and twist it into a weakness. They want to paint you as an unstable surrogate who barged into a billionaire's life to claim a fortune.”
Elena took a deep breath, trying to push down the rising panic. “What does Marcus say?”
“Marcus says we have two options,” Caden said, his gray-green eyes locking onto hers with an intense, unreadable look. “Option one is a drawn-out, public custody battle that will last years. The press will dig into every second of your past. They will drag your mother’s death, your financial debts, and your psychological records through the tabloid mud. The children will grow up under the glare of paparazzi, caught between two opposing legal teams.”
“No,” Elena said immediately, shaking her head. “I won’t let them do that to Adrian, Luca, and Mira. They’ve already been robbed of their first year. What is option two?”
Caden took a slow step toward her. The library grew quiet, save for the patter of rain against the high arched windows.
“Option two,” Caden said, his voice dropping into a quiet, intense rhythm, “is to eliminate their legal leverage entirely. Under state law, a court cannot question the maternal custody rights of a mother if she is legally married to the primary father, provided both parents reside together and share a unified estate.”
Elena froze. The breath caught in her lungs. “Married?”
“A legal marriage,” Caden clarified, though his gaze did not waver. “Not a public circus. A swift, binding union. If you become my wife, Elena, Harrison’s lawyers cannot petition for your psychological evaluation without my consent—which they will never get. Your custody of the children becomes absolute, protected under the umbrella of the Voss estate. You will no longer be an ex-surrogate fighting for access. You will be Mrs. Voss.”
Elena’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. Mrs. Voss. The words sounded surreal, almost dangerous.
“Caden... you don’t love me,” Elena whispered softly, searching his face for any sign of deception. “You hardly know me. We’ve known each other for less than a month. You were married to Julianna... you’re doing this out of duty to your kids.”
Caden closed the distance between them, stopping mere inches away. He reached out, his long fingers gently lifting her chin so she had no choice but to look into his eyes.
“I was married to Julianna for strategic reasons arranged by our families,” Caden revealed, his voice soft yet incredibly powerful. “We respected each other, but there was no fire, Elena. There was no soul. I thought love was a fairy tale manufactured for romantic novels. But over the last month, watching you stand up to Harrison, watching you bring warmth back into this cold house, watching the way you look at our children... I know what respect, admiration, and fierce loyalty look like.”
He paused, his thumb gently brushing across her cheekbone.
“I am not asking you to pretend to love me tomorrow, Elena. I am asking you to partner with me. Let me protect you. Let me give you the security, the power, and the family you were robbed of. Stand beside me as my equal.”
Elena looked into the eyes of the most feared man in the city, and for the first time, she saw no coldness, no ice—only a deep, burning protective fire that matched her own.

“If we do this,” Elena said, her voice steadying, “it’s not a business contract, Caden. We build a real family. No lies. No secrets.”
Caden’s lips curved into a genuine, breathtaking smile that transformed his entire hard face. “No lies, Elena. No secrets. Never again.”
