Chapter 6 - The Unspoken Spark

The small, private ceremony took place three days later in the garden courtyard of the Voss estate.
There were no reporters, no grand ballroom crowds, and no societal fake smiles. It was just Caden, Elena, a local judge, Marcus, Ortega, and three toddlers in tiny tailored suits and a miniature white dress, sitting in a velvet stroller babbling happily.
Elena wore an understated, elegant tea-length lace dress in ivory. When Caden slid the flawless, oval-cut diamond ring onto her finger, his hand was surprisingly warm, his touch possessive yet remarkably gentle.
“By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife,” the judge declared. “You may kiss the bride.”
Caden turned to Elena. For a second, a rare flicker of hesitation showed in his gray-green eyes, as if asking for permission. Elena gave a subtle nod.
Caden cupped her cheek, pulled her gently closer, and pressed his lips against hers.
It was supposed to be a symbolic kiss for legal finality. But the moment their lips touched, a current of electricity shot through both of them. Caden’s grip tightened on her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, deepening the kiss with a raw, unexpected passion that made Elena’s head spin. Her hands instinctively rose to his shoulders, her fingers gripping the fine wool of his jacket as she kissed him back, forgetting the judge, forgetting the guards, forgetting the entire world.
When they finally broke apart, both of them were slightly breathless. Elena’s cheeks were flushed pink, her eyes wide with newfound realization. Caden stared down at her, his dark eyes glowing with a heat she had never seen before.
“Mama! Papa!” Adrian shouted from the stroller, clapping his small hands together, breaking the intense spell.
Caden laughed—a rich, deep sound that stunned even Ortega, who had never heard his boss laugh in six years of service. Caden picked up Adrian, while Elena lifted Mira, and they walked back into the house together as a legally bound family.
That night, after the children were asleep, the reality of their new arrangement set in.
Elena moved her personal belongings into the master wing. The master suite was vast, featuring a king-sized canopy bed, a marble fireplace, and a private balcony overlooking the sea.
She stood near the balcony doors, watching the dark waves crash against the rocks, feeling a sudden surge of nervousness. They were legally married. They shared a bed. But were they truly ready for what came next?
The sound of the bathroom door opening made her turn around.
Caden walked out wearing dark lounge pants and an unbuttoned black silk shirt, revealing his lean, sculpted chest. He was drying his wet hair with a towel. He paused when he saw her standing by the window.
“You don’t have to be nervous, Elena,” Caden said softly, setting the towel aside and walking toward her. “This is your home. I am your husband, but I will never force you into anything you aren’t ready for.”
Elena looked at him—this powerful, terrifying man who had built a fortress around his heart, yet treated her with absolute reverence.
“I’m not scared of you, Caden,” she said, stepping toward him. “I was just... thinking about how fast my life changed. A month ago, I was sweeping floors in a diner, believing I was entirely alone in the world.”
“You will never be alone again,” Caden promised, stopping right in front of her. He reached out, gently untying the ribbon that held her hair up, letting her dark curls fall down over her shoulders. “I swear to you on my life, Elena. As long as I breathe, no one will ever make you feel small or alone again.”
Elena looked up into his gray-green eyes, seeing the raw truth in his words. The lingering walls she had built around her heart began to crumble. She raised her hand, resting her palm against his warm, strong jaw.
“I know,” she whispered. “And I don’t want to take things slow anymore, Caden.”

Caden’s breath hitched. In one fluid movement, he wrapped his arms around her waist, lifting her effortlessly into his arms. Elena gasped softly, her arms wrapping around his neck as he carried her to the canopy bed.
That night, beneath the soft glow of the fireplace, the legal contract was forgotten, replaced by a passionate, undeniable connection that burned away the ghost of their past heartbreaks.
