Chapter 4 - The Fortress of Glass

The private maternity wing at Virginia Beach General Hospital was transformed into an impenetrable fortress within two hours.
Elias had deployed four armed private security guards stationed at every elevator bank, stairwell, and entrance to my room. By midnight, Dr. Lin—a senior obstetric specialist who had been a close personal friend of my father—had stabilized my blood pressure and hooked me up to intravenous medication to halt the premature contractions.
"The stress triggered a spike in your cortisol levels, Clara," Dr. Lin said gently, checking the twin heart monitors. "The babies are stable—their heartbeats are 142 and 148—but you cannot leave this bed. You are seven months pregnant with twins. Any further physical or emotional trauma could force an emergency delivery."
"I can't stay quiet while they walk free, Dr. Lin," I whispered, staring up at the white ceiling.
"You won't have to," Elias said, stepping into the room from the hallway. He had changed into a fresh white shirt, his coat off, his tie loosened. "Arthur Vance and District Attorney Marcus Kane are in the legal suite downstairs right now. They just listened to the recording."
"What did Kane say?" I asked, my heart pounding against my ribs.
" Kane issued immediate arrest warrants for Graham Whitaker and Vivian Cole for First-Degree Murder, Grand Larceny, Conspiracy, and Deprivation of Rights Under Color of Law," Elias reported, his voice dark and triumphant. "The State Police and FBI Financial Crimes Unit are raiding Graham’s law firm and Vivian’s home right now."
Before I could answer, the room door opened softly.
Arthur Vance—the silver-haired lead attorney who had worked with my father for thirty years—stepped in, carrying a black leather briefcase.
"Clara," Arthur said warmly, taking my hand with deep respect. "Your father would be so proud of you tonight. The trap he set six years ago has finally sprung."
"Have they arrested Graham yet?" I asked.
Arthur’s face went slightly grim. "Graham wasn't at the house when the troopers arrived."
I sat up straight, panic instantly surging through my veins. "What? Where is he?"
"Vivian Cole was taken into custody at her townhouse thirty minutes ago," Arthur explained. "When the officers breached her door, she was frantically packing bags with three hundred thousand dollars in cash and two passports. But Graham... Graham slipped out through the woods behind your estate before the perimeter was locked down."
"He’s running," I whispered.
"He can't run far," Elias assured me, laying a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "His accounts are frozen. His passport is red-flagged at every airport, port, and border crossing in the country. He has no access to liquidity."
"You don't understand, Elias," I said, my voice rising with sheer terror. "Graham built a secondary contingency. Three years ago, he bought a thirty-foot offshore motorboat under a fake shell company name. He kept it docked at a private slip in North Landing Marina. He told me it was an 'investment property' for a client!"

Elias’s eyes narrowed instantly. "North Landing Marina... that’s less than fifteen minutes from here."
He turned to Sergeant Vance, who was standing by the door. "Sergeant, notify State Police Aviation and the Coast Guard immediately! Target is attempting to flee via the Intracoastal Waterway!"
