Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Shadow

The gunshot echoed through the narrow room like a cannon blast.
Elias had fired first. The heavy bullet struck Graham square in the right shoulder, shattering his collarbone and knocking him backward into the doorframe. Graham’s gun clattered across the linoleum floor, spinning toward the base of my bed.
Graham let out a high-pitched scream of agony, clutching his shattered shoulder as blood soaked through his oilskin coat.
He collapsed against the wall, sliding down to the floor, panting violently, his face white with shock.
Elias moved forward with terrifying speed. He kicked Graham’s gun out into the hallway, then brought his heavy leather boot down onto Graham’s chest, pinning him to the floor with enough force to crack two ribs.
"Don't move," Elias growled, pressing the barrel of his sidearm directly between Graham’s eyes.
Graham looked up at Elias, gasping for air, tears of pain and terror spilling over his bloody cheeks. The arrogant, wealthy, untouchable lawyer was gone, reduced to a broken, pleading coward bleeding on a hospital floor.
"Please..." Graham sobbed, his voice cracking. "Elias... please don't kill me... I'll give it all back... every penny... I'll tell the police everything Vivian did... it was her idea! She made me do it!"
I swung my legs over the side of the hospital bed, holding my heavy stomach, and stood up.
I walked slowly across the cold floor until I stood right beside Elias, looking down at the man I had once believed was my protector.
"You blamed my mother," I said, my voice dripping with cold, righteous fury. "You lied about my brother. You killed my father. And you tried to take my children."
Graham looked up at me, his eyes wide with pathetic desperation. "Clara... baby... please... remember our wedding day... remember how much I loved you—"
"You never loved me, Graham," I interrupted, looking at him as if he were a stain on the rug. "You loved my father’s name. And now, you're going to spend the rest of your life in a concrete cell remembering mine."
Heavy footsteps slammed down the corridor as armed State Police officers and hospital security swept into the room, their tactical lights cutting through the darkness.
"GET ON THE GROUND! DON'T MOVE!" the officers screamed, swarming over Graham, pulling his arms behind his back, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
Graham screamed in pain as they hoisted him off the floor, blood dripping onto his designer shoes.
As they dragged him out into the hallway, Sergeant Vance walked up to Elias and me, taking off his hat.
"Mrs. Whitaker... Colonel Monroe..." Vance said, bowing his head respectfully. "Graham Whitaker is officially under federal custody. The Coast Guard has secured his boat. It's over."

I collapsed back into Elias’s strong arms, letting out a ragged, trembling sob of profound relief.
The shadow was gone.
