Chapter 5 - The Rising Tide

The storm outside had reached its peak by 2:00 AM.
Lightning flickered across the sky, painting the hospital windows in blinding flashes of white light, followed by the low, rumbling thunder that shook the glass.
I lay in the hospital bed, listening to the rhythmic thump-thump, thump-thump of the twin heart monitors. Elias stood at the window, holding a secure satellite phone to his ear, coordinating with law enforcement.
"Coast Guard cutter Reliance has locked down the mouth of the bay," Elias reported, turning toward me. "State police units have surrounded North Landing Marina. If Graham is at that boat, he’s trapped."
Suddenly, the lights in the hospital room flickered once... twice... and died.
The room plunged into pitch darkness.
The steady hum of the heart monitors stopped. The electronic door locks let out a series of high-pitched emergency beeps as the hospital’s auxiliary power generators kicked in, bathing the hallway in dim, amber emergency lights.
"Stay here," Elias ordered, drawing a concealed sidearm from his shoulder holster—a weapon he was licensed to carry as a former federal prosecutor.
He stepped to the door, peering into the amber-lit hallway.
The two private security guards who had been standing outside were lying on the floor, unconscious.
Standing over them, dripping wet with rain, wearing a dark oilskin jacket, holding a heavy steel tactical flashlight and a silenced pistol, was Graham.
My breath caught in my throat. I couldn't scream. My hands locked around my stomach as the terror paralyzed my vocal cords.
"Drop the weapon, Graham!" Elias commanded, raising his handgun with lethal precision.
Graham didn't drop his gun. Instead, he smiled—a wild, crazed, desperate grin that made him look completely unhinged.
"You really thought a police dragnet could stop me, Elias?" Graham spat, his voice raspy and breathless. "I built this city’s legal system! I know every blind spot in every camera array from here to the Carolina line!"
"It's over, Graham," Elias said calmly, taking half a step forward to block Graham’s line of sight to my bed. "Vivian is in custody. She’s already talking to the DA to save herself from the death penalty. The recording from Jonathan’s study is in federal hands."
At the mention of Vivian’s betrayal, Graham’s face contorted with insane fury.
"That stupid, incompetent bitch!" Graham roared. "I gave her everything! I gave her fourteen million dollars! And she broke under ten minutes of interrogation?!"
"You gave her nothing because none of it was yours," I said from the bed, my voice trembling but clear.
Graham turned his flashlight beam straight into my face, blinding me with the harsh white light.
"Clara..." Graham sneered, stepping into the room, his gun pointing directly at Elias’s chest. "My sweet, obedient, gullible Clara. You were supposed to sign the final trust release tomorrow. You were supposed to die in childbirth like your weak mother did!"
"Step back, Graham," Elias warned, his finger tightening on the trigger.
"If you shoot me, Elias, the noise will bring every officer in the building," Graham laughed maniacally. "But you won't shoot. Because if you do, you'll never find the offshore accounts where I moved the remaining six million dollars of your father's money!"
May you like
"I don't care about the money, Graham," Elias whispered coldly. "I care about my sister."
BANG!
