Chapter 8 - The Ruin of the Empire
The fallout was swift and absolute.
Olivia Sterling was convicted on multiple counts of federal fraud and sentenced to twelve years in prison. The Sterling estate, the cars, the jewelry, and the family wealth were seized by the government to repay defrauded investors.
Sterling Financial declared bankruptcy. Ethan, having signed several fraudulent documents under his mother's direction, lost his broker's license and faced severe financial penalties that left him penniless.
A month after the trial, I was sitting at a quiet outdoor cafe near my parents' house when Ethan found me. He was wearing an ill-fitting, faded suit—a stark contrast to the custom-tailored clothing he used to wear.
"Clara," he said softly, standing by my table.
"Ethan," I acknowledged calmly.
"I... I wanted to apologize," he said, staring down at the concrete, echoing his stance from that awful day. "I was a coward. My mother controlled my whole life, but that's no excuse. I should have jumped into that pool. I should have stood up for your parents."
"Yes, you should have," I agreed truthfully.
"I lost everything, Clara," he choked back a tear. "My house, my job, my friends. Everyone vanished."

"You lost things, Ethan," I said gently, looking him in the eye. "My parents almost lost their dignity, but they kept their self-respect. I hope one day you find yours. But please don't come looking for me again."
Ethan nodded slowly, wiped a tear from his cheek, and walked away into the crowd.
