Chapter 10 - The Beautiful Horizon

A year later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the private beach of our new home in Cape Cod.
The house was a stunning, cedar-shingle mansion sitting on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by wild roses and sweet beach grass. It was the exact spot where the photograph of my mother and me had been taken so many years ago.
On the beach below, my mother was sitting in a comfortable beach chair, laughing as she watched a golden retriever puppy chase seagulls along the shoreline. She was completely healthy, her skin tanned from the sun, her eyes bright with a peace she had earned through a lifetime of sacrifice.
I sat on the wooden deck of the house, a cool glass of lemonade in my hand, watching the waves roll in.
A pair of strong, warm arms wrapped around me from behind, and the familiar scent of sandalwood and cedar filled my senses. I leaned back against Liam’s chest, a soft sigh of pure contentment escaping my lips.
"The lawyers just finished the final paperwork for the O'Connor Holdings merger with the city's green-energy initiative," Liam said, kissing the top of my head. "The shipping ports are officially carbon-neutral, Maya. No more shadows. No more secrets."
"I am so proud of you, Liam," I said, turning my head to look at his handsome face. "You’ve turned an empire of war into a legacy of peace."
"I didn't do it alone," Liam said, his gray eyes looking down at me with a love that was absolute and unconditional.
He slowly knelt down on one knee on the wooden deck, pulling a small, velvet box from his pocket. He opened it to reveal a stunning, flawless emerald ring surrounded by a halo of brilliant diamonds—the color of the deep, green sea behind us.
"Maya Lin," Liam said, his voice deep and steady, yet carrying a beautiful, rare tremble. "You walked into my life in the freezing rain, and you showed me that there is something far more powerful than revenge. You showed me what it means to heal, to love, and to be truly alive. Will you marry me, and let me spend the rest of my life protecting you?"
Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness spilled down my cheeks. I didn't hesitate for a single second.
"Yes, Liam," I cried, throwing my arms around his neck, pulling him up for a deep, passionate kiss as the sound of the ocean rolled behind us. "A thousand times, yes."

Down on the beach, my mother looked up, seeing us holding each other on the deck, and waved with a radiant, beautiful smile.
The rain had finally stopped, the cold was gone, and the horizon before us was endless, warm, and beautiful. We had built our fortress, not out of stone and steel, but out of love, resilience, and a future that belonged entirely to us.
