Chapter 9 - The Return to Boston

Six months later.
The city of Boston was beautiful in the spring, the cherry blossoms blooming along the Charles River and the sun reflecting off the glass towers of the harbor.
The grand opening of the Clara Lin Medical Center in South Boston was the biggest event of the year. The state-of-the-art facility sat on the very docks where Liam had once been shot as a teenager, a beautiful symbol of redemption and rebirth.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by the governor, the mayor, and hundreds of local families who would now have access to free, world-class healthcare. My mother stood at the podium, looking elegant and radiant in a royal-blue silk dress, her voice strong and filled with hope as she delivered her opening speech.
I stood in the crowd, watching her with a pride that filled my entire soul. Beside me stood Liam, looking immaculate in a tailored charcoal suit, his hand resting gently around my waist.
"She looks beautiful, doesn't she?" I whispered, leaning against him.
"She looks like an angel, Maya," Liam agreed, his voice warm. "Just like the one who saved me twenty-five years ago."
As the crowd erupted into applause, my mother cut the giant red ribbon, officially opening the center.
After the ceremony, Liam led me away from the crowd, walking down the quiet pier overlooking the harbor. The wind was warm, carrying the fresh scent of the ocean.
"I have one more stop to make today," Liam said, a mysterious smile playing on his lips.
He led me to a beautiful, classic wooden sailboat docked at the end of the pier. Painted on the stern in elegant white letters was the name: The Clara.
"You bought a boat?" I laughed, looking at the pristine sails and polished teak deck.
"I bought a memory," Liam said, stepping onto the boat and offering me his hand.
I took it, stepping aboard. In the center of the cabin, placed on a small table, was a beautifully restored frame. Inside was the original photograph of my mother and me at Cape Cod—the one Walter Mercer had crushed beneath his shoe.
"I wanted you to have a place where you could always see the ocean, Maya," Liam said softly, standing behind me and wrapping his arms around my waist. "Where the only cracks in your life are the ones we've already healed."
I turned in his arms, looking up at him, my heart overflowing with a love so deep it took my breath away.

"Thank you, Liam," I whispered, wrapping my arms around his neck. "For everything."
He leaned down, his lips meeting mine in a deep, sweet, and incredibly tender kiss, sealing our past and welcoming our future.
