Chapter 10 - The House with the Blue Door
A year later.
It was a brilliant, sunny Saturday afternoon in late spring.
The house at the end of the quiet suburban street looked bright, warm, and full of vibrant life. The blue front door had been freshly painted, and new flowers bloomed in the garden beds around the porch.
In the backyard, a new wooden swing set stood proudly on the green grass.
A large crowd of friends, neighbors, and first responders had gathered on the lawn for a special celebration: Sophie’s sixth birthday and baby Leo’s first birthday party.
Laughter filled the air as children ran across the grass playing tag.
Dr. Audra Kline sat on a porch bench beside Detective Vance, sipping cold lemonade, watching the happy chaos unfold.
Nearby, Mr. Ellis stood by the barbecue grill, flipping hot dogs and hamburgers alongside Officer Bellamy and Paramedic Marcus Vance.
In the middle of the lawn, Natalie sat on a soft picnic blanket.
Beside her, one-year-old Leo was taking his very first unsteady steps across the grass, giggling hysterically as his big sister Sophie held his hands, guiding him carefully.
"Come on, Leo!" Sophie cheered happily, wearing a bright party crown. "You can do it! One, two, three steps!"
Leo took three wobbly steps and tumbled safely onto the soft grass, roaring with baby laughter as Sophie tickled his belly.
Natalie watched her children, her heart overflowing with a peace so profound it made her eyes fill with soft tears of joy.
She stood up, walked across the lawn toward Dr. Kline and the first responders, carrying a large homemade cake covered in colorful candles and bright yellow icing.
"Everyone!" Natalie called out warmly, her voice filled with happiness. "It’s time for the cake!"
The crowd gathered around the outdoor picnic table as Sophie stood proudly beside her little brother, her eyes reflecting the glowing candlelight.
"Make a big wish, Sophie," Natalie smiled, wrapping her arms around her daughter and holding Leo close against her side.
Sophie looked around the circle at her mother’s glowing, healthy face, at her happy little brother, at Mr. Ellis, Dr. Audra, and all the brave people who had come to their rescue.

"I don't need to make a wish," Sophie declared with a bright, beautiful smile that illuminated the entire yard. "All my wishes already came true."
Sophie blew out the candles, and as the entire yard erupted into happy cheers, laughter, and applause, the warm spring breeze carried the sound of love and life far beyond the house with the blue door.
