Chapter 5 - Tarmac Intercept

Onboard Flight 842, the cabin was quiet as the Boeing 777 taxied slowly toward Runway 22 Left.

In seat 14B of First Class, David Carter sat wearing a sharp charcoal suit and designer sunglasses. He looked out the window at the rain-slicked asphalt, adjusting his wristwatch.

In his leather briefcase beneath the seat lay two hundred thousand dollars in crisp cash, a encrypted hardware crypto wallet containing millions, and his new Canadian identity documents.

He closed his eyes, taking a deep, satisfied breath.

It’s done, he thought to himself. By tonight, Natalie will be gone. The police will treat it as a tragic medical emergency or a sudden pregnancy stroke. I am free.

Suddenly, the plane slowed down.

The powerful hum of the jet engines faded to a low idle. The aircraft executed a sharp turn away from the main runway and pulled onto a secluded taxiway loop.

A ripple of low whispers spread through the first-class cabin.

Over the intercom, the captain’s voice sounded slightly strained. "Ladies and gentlemen, this is the captain speaking. We have been instructed by Air Traffic Control to return to the terminal building due to a minor paperwork clearance issue. We apologize for the delay and expect to be underway shortly."

David’s heart did a sudden, violent flip.

He sat up straight, his hands gripping the leather armrests so hard his knuckles turned white. He looked out the window.

Four dark blue police cruisers and two heavily armored SWAT vans were speeding across the tarmac, their red and blue strobe lights flashing wildly against the gray fog.

They slid to a halt surrounding the Boeing 777.

"No... no, no, no," David muttered under his breath, panic rising like acid in his throat. "It’s impossible. She didn't know... nobody was supposed to come until Monday!"

The front aircraft door opened with a heavy hiss.

Two armed Federal Marshals and Detective Vance stepped into the first-class cabin.

"David Carter!" Vance called out, his voice booming through the silent plane. "Keep your hands where we can see them!"

The passengers gasped as David scrambled backward against the window, his eyes wild with terror.

"Stay back!" David screamed, reaching into his coat pocket. "Stay away from me!"

Before he could pull anything out, two Marshals tackled him across the seats, pinning his arms behind his back and slamming his face against the carpeted floor.

The cold, heavy weight of steel handcuffs snapped tightly around his wrists.

Detective Vance knelt beside him, leaning down close to David’s ear. "Your five-year-old daughter called 911, David. She saved her mother. She saved her baby brother. And she just sent you to prison for the rest of your life."
