Chapter 2 - A Fragile Spark

The trauma bay was a symphony of controlled chaos. Monitors beeped incessantly, sterile blue drapes were spread over Natalie’s body, and the sharp scent of antiseptic filled the room.
"Incision made," Dr. Chen said calmly, his hands moving with practiced, razor-sharp precision.
Within ninety seconds, the abdominal wall and uterus were opened. Dr. Chen reached inside and carefully lifted the tiny, pale body of baby Carter into the bright surgical lights.
The room went dead silent.
The baby was limp. His skin was a dark, dusky blue, and he made no sound. No cry. No gasp.
"Cord clamped and cut!" Dr. Chen called out, passing the infant to the waiting NICU resuscitation table where Dr. Kline stood ready.
"Zero muscle tone," Dr. Kline noted, swiftly clear-suctioning the baby’s airway. "Heart rate is forty. Start infant CPR! Two-thumb technique, three compressions to one breath!"
While Dr. Chen focused on closing Natalie’s surgical incision and stabilizing her massive blood loss, Dr. Kline worked frantically on the tiny newborn.
"Dose of Epinephrine via the umbilical line, point-zero-two milligrams!" Dr. Kline ordered.
A nurse injected the life-saving drug. Dr. Kline gently placed a neonate mask over his tiny nose and mouth, squeezing the bag rhythmically.
One, two, three... breath.
One, two, three... breath.
"Come on, little guy," Dr. Kline whispered, her eyes fixed on the tiny chest. "Your big sister called for help. Don't give up now."
For three excruciating minutes, the resuscitation room held its breath.
Then, the monitor chimed.
Beep... beep... beep-beep.
The baby’s chest shuddered. A faint, raspy cough escaped his throat, followed by a thin, feeble cry that grew stronger with every passing second.
"Heart rate is rising!" the NICU nurse shouted. "One-twenty! One-thirty-five! Color is returning!"
"Respirations stabilized," Dr. Kline let out a long, shuddering breath, a warm smile breaking beneath her surgical mask. "He’s fighting. Transport him to the NICU immediately, put him on a gentle CPAP, and start hypothermia therapy to protect his brain."
Dr. Kline turned back to Natalie’s bed. "How is the mother?"
Dr. Chen wiped his forehead. "Uterine bleeding is controlled, but her neurological status remains critical. The toxin she ingested was concentrated. We’ve administered the reversal agents, but she’s in a deep coma. We’re moving her to the ICU."

Audra looked through the trauma bay window, where Detective Vance and Detective Sarah Miller from the Northbridge Police Department were already standing, waiting for answers.
"It’s time to find out who tried to erase this family," Audra said softly.
