Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush

On Monday morning, while I was still trapped in my hospital bed recovering from surgery to stabilize my pelvis, my father made his grand move. He didn't just target my personal bank accounts; he attempted an internal coup at Vanguard Legacy Holdings.
Because I was bedridden, my father convened an emergency meeting with the minority shareholders—two legacy partners who had been close friends with Evan's late father. Dad presented the fake medical report and claimed I was suffering from severe post-traumatic psychosis, rendering me unfit to serve as CEO.
What he didn't know was that Daniel had secretly installed a secure teleconferencing setup directly into my hospital room.
When the board meeting opened at 10:00 AM in our downtown skyscraper, my father sat at the head of the mahogany table, looking polished and solemn. "It breaks my heart to bring this forward," he told the board, waving Dr. Vance's forged letter. "My daughter is unhinged. She is recklessly revoking operational funding and endangering the family business. As her attorney-in-fact, I am stepping in to assume executive control."
"Is that so, Dad?"
My voice echoed loudly through the boardroom's surround-sound speakers. The wall-mounted display flickered to life, showing me sitting upright in my hospital bed, dressed in a sharp blazer over my medical gown, flanked by Daniel Cho and Dr. Rebecca Stern, the Chief of Psychiatry at University Hospital.
My father turned pale. "Mara... you shouldn't be exertion-testing yourself. You're confused—"
"I am completely lucid, Arthur," I interrupted coldly. "And you are currently committing corporate fraud."
Dr. Stern stepped up to the camera and presented the signed, notarized psychiatric and neurological evaluations conducted over the weekend. "Mrs. Mara Vance is operating at peak cognitive function. The document provided by Mr. Vance was authored by a doctor who has not examined the patient in over six months and constitutes gross medical malpractice."
Before my father could speak, Daniel submitted a digital packet to every board member. It contained detailed forensic accounting proving that Arthur had embezzled over $800,000 from Vanguard accounts over the past three years using fraudulent invoices signed by Claire.
"Board members," Daniel announced, "we are filing formal criminal charges for fraud, forgery, and attempted grand larceny against Arthur and Claire. Furthermore, Mara is exercising her 67% voting majority to strip all authority from any officer supporting this illegal takeover."

The silence in the boardroom was deafening. My father looked around the table, but the other shareholders quickly shifted their eyes away, horrified by the evidence. He stood up slowly, his face flushed with rage. "You think you won, Mara? You're still trapped in that bed. You can't run a company from a hospital!"
"I don't need to run it from here forever," I replied evenly. "But I can destroy your empire in thirty seconds. Security is outside the door. Hand over your keycards and clear out your office."
