With my family reeling, Daniel turned his full attention to the corrupt physician who had started the entire crisis: Dr. Arthur Vance (no relation to my father's family, despite the shared name).
Dr. Vance’s fake medical evaluation was the linchpin of my father's conservatorship claim. If we could dismantle Vance, my parents' legal standing would collapse completely, opening them up to severe criminal charges.
Daniel initiated a formal complaint with the State Medical Board and filed a civil lawsuit for medical malpractice, civil conspiracy, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Faced with losing his medical license and facing potential prison time as an co-conspirator to corporate fraud, Dr. Vance broke within forty-eight hours.
His attorney contacted Daniel offering a full retraction and a sworn deposition detailing how the arrangement had occurred.
In his videotaped deposition, a trembling Dr. Vance admitted that my father had approached him months earlier with a pre-written letter. My father had paid Vance $50,000 under the table—funded through a shell company Claire had set up—to keep the letter signed, dated, and ready for deployment the moment I experienced any medical emergency that rendered me vulnerable.
"He told me Mara was mentally unstable after her husband died," Dr. Vance stammered on screen. "He said he was just trying to protect his grandchildren and that the document would only be used if she truly lost her mind. When he called me the morning after her car accident, he told me she was on heavy narcotics and tearing the family apart. I signed it without verifying..."
