Chapter 1 - The Sky Falls on Ashford

The heavy, rhythmic thrumming in the air turned from a distant vibration into a deafening roar that rattled every pane of glass in the kitchen. Kyle let the curtain drop from his trembling fingers, his face as white as chalk.

"Dad... you need to look outside," Kyle stuttered, backing away from the window until his spine hit the refrigerator with a dull thud. "You need to look now."

Frank ignored his son, keeping the barrel of his service weapon pointed directly at my chest as I lay cuffed on the cold kitchen tile. "Stay where you are! Don't you dare move!" he barked, his voice straining under a sudden spike of panic he couldn't hide.

The roar grew so intense that the kitchen cabinets shook violently, sending a glass mug sliding off the top shelf. It crashed onto the counter, shattering into a dozen pieces. My mother buried her face in her hands, sinking to her knees beside the stove, sobbing uncontrollably.

Shadows suddenly swept across the backyard. Outside, the sunlight was blocked out completely as three heavy-lift military aircraft—two Black Hawk helicopters flanked by an armed Apache attack chopper—descended directly over the quiet suburban cul-de-sac. The massive downdraft from their rotors tore through the neighborhood, ripping branches off the oak trees, blowing over patio furniture, and sending dust storms swirling against the house.

Through the front windows, red and blue strobe lights flooded the street. The sound of heavy diesel engines roared as four black armored federal SUVs and two tactical troop transports screeched to a halt, blocking off both ends of the avenue.

Frank’s eyes darted frantically toward the living room window. "What the hell is going on out there?!"

Before he could process the scene, the heavy wooden front door of the house was blown open with a deafening CRACK.

"FEDERAL TACTICAL TEAM! SPECIAL OPERATIONS COMMAND! NOBODY MOVE!" a booming voice echoed through the hallway.

Heavy, rhythmic footsteps pounded across the hardwood floor as a squad of full-tier military operators clad in black tactical gear, night-vision visors, and fully automatic rifles swept into the house with terrifying speed and precision.

"CLEAR THE HALLWAY!" "CONTAINMENT ESTABLISHED!"

In less than three seconds, the kitchen doorway was breached. Four laser sights—bright red, steady, and deadly—focused instantly on Frank Hale’s chest and forehead.

"DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW OR YOU WILL BE ELIMINATED!" the lead operator shouted, his voice cut from cold steel.

Frank froze. The gun in his hand trembled so violently he almost dropped it out of sheer shock. "I-I am Lieutenant Frank Hale! Ashford Police! This is my house—"

"DROP THE WEAPON!" two operators roared in unison, stepping forward and leveling their rifles directly at his face.

Frank’s knees buckled. The bravado that had sustained him in his small-town police cruiser evaporated in a fraction of a second. He let go of the pistol. It clattered loudly against the tile floor, sliding under the kitchen table.

Two operators swarmed him like shadows. One kicked the gun away while the other grabbed Frank’s shoulder, forcing him face-down onto the floor with a heavy slam. A heavy knee pinned his spine down as steel zip-ties were brutally ratcheted around his wrists.

"Get off me! I'm a police officer! You can't do this!" Frank screamed, his cheek pressed flat against the dirty floorboards.

Kyle dropped his phone, throwing his hands in the air, trembling violently in the corner. "Don't shoot! I didn't do anything! It was all him! It was my dad!"

A tall, broad-shouldered officer wearing four stars on his camouflage collar stepped through the breach. It was General Marcus Bradley, Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, accompanied by two federal prosecutors holding open warrants.

General Bradley’s eyes swept the room until they landed on me lying cuffed on the floor, the blood dripping from my split lip onto my uniform collar.

His jaw set into a terrifying line of rage.

"Uncuff General Voss immediately," Bradley commanded.

A medic rushed forward, using a heavy key to unlock the handcuffs binding my wrists behind my back. I sat up slowly, rubbing my bruised skin. I reached up with my gloved hand, wiping the blood from my chin, and looked directly into Frank’s terrified eyes.

"Four minutes, Lieutenant," I said quietly, standing up to my full height. "I told you."
