Chapter 3 - The Department Clean-Up

By 5:00 p.m., news of the military raid on Ashford had spread through the small town like wildfire. Local residents had gathered near the police tape at the edge of the street, taking pictures of the helicopters idling on the nearby high school football field and the line of federal vehicles parked outside the Hale residence.

Inside the Ashford Police Department headquarters downtown, Chief of Police Arthur Vance was sitting in his air-conditioned office, sipping coffee, completely oblivious to the thunderstorm heading his way.

The glass doors of the lobby were pushed open with sudden force as four military police officers stepped inside, followed by myself, General Bradley, and a team of federal prosecutors.

The desk sergeant stood up quickly, his hand dropping to his belt out of habit. "Can I help you folks? This is a restricted—"

"Sit down, Sergeant," General Bradley ordered, exposing his four-star rank. "Where is your Chief?"

Within seconds, we kicked open the door to Chief Vance’s private office. Vance leaped out of his leather chair, nearly spilling his coffee across his desk.

"What in the world is the meaning of this?!" Vance demanded, his face turning red. "Who gave you authority to storm into my station?!"

I stepped forward, laying a signed federal warrant flat on his mahogany desk.

"Chief Vance," I said smoothly. "I am General Victoria Voss. Forty-five minutes ago, your senior lieutenant, Frank Hale, illegally detained me, drew his weapon on me, and physically battered me while I was conducting official Department of Defense business."

Vance blinked, looking at my black uniform pants, my rank insignia, and the severe bruise darkening my cheek. His red face suddenly turned entirely white.

"Frank... Frank did what?" Vance stammered. "No... there must be a mistake. Frank told me you were just his stepdaughter who was causing trouble at home—"

"Frank Hale is currently in federal custody," Lead Prosecutor Amanda Reynolds interrupted, stepping beside me. "And we are here with a federal subpoena for every arrest report, internal affairs file, and financial record associated with Lieutenant Hale’s decade at this department."

Vance’s hands began to shake as he looked at the legal documents sitting on his desk. "Now wait just a minute... Frank is a good cop. He might be hot-headed, but this is a local matter—"

"It stopped being a local matter when your department's culture allowed a lieutenant to use his badge to intimidate citizens and assault military personnel," Prosecutor Reynolds said coldly. "We have reason to believe that Lieutenant Hale has spent years using his position here to cover up domestic complaints, falsify reports, and abuse his authority with your full knowledge."

"That's a lie!" Vance shouted defensively.

"We'll see," Reynolds replied, turning to the military police team waiting in the hallway. "Lock down the record room. Seize all computers, server drives, and dispatch logs from the past five years."

Chief Vance collapsed back into his leather chair, staring helplessly as federal agents began combing through his filing cabinets. The wall of protection Frank Hale had built around himself using his small-town police badge had just been completely demolished.

I walked out of the chief's office and stood in the quiet hallway of the police station. The shadow that had hung over my mother’s life for ten years was finally breaking apart under the absolute light of justice.
