Chapter 5 - The Digital Exposure

While Frank was languishing in a federal holding cell, his son Kyle was facing his own reckoning.

Kyle had spent years using his father’s position as a police officer to act with absolute impunity in town. He had bullied classmates, run obnoxious social media channels mocking local residents, and helped his father maintain the illusion of family dominance.

The next morning, inside the FBI field office, Kyle sat across a metal interrogation table from Prosecutor Amanda Reynolds and two cyber-forensic analysts.

Kyle looked exhausted, his designer hoodie crumpled, his eyes bloodshot. "Look, I told you guys already! I didn't do anything! I was just holding my phone! It's free speech!"

Prosecutor Reynolds opened a thick black binder, sliding several printed pages across the table.

"Kyle," Reynolds said calmly. "When our cyber unit extracted the data from your phone, we didn't just find the video you recorded of General Voss in the kitchen yesterday."

Kyle’s eyes darted nervously to the papers. "What else could you find? It's just my private stuff."

"We found three years of text messages between you and your father," Reynolds revealed, her tone icy cold. "Messages where your father explicitly instructed you to use his police access to run license plates of people you had personal arguments with. Messages where you bragged about using your father's badge to avoid traffic citations and drug sweeps at your college."

Kyle swallowed hard, his skin going pale. "That... that was just talking trash—"

"And then there's this," Reynolds continued, pulling out a printout of an encrypted chat log. "Two weeks ago, you downloaded a folder of private military documents from your sister’s personal laptop while she was visiting your mother, and you attempted to sell them to an online military gear forum."

Kyle’s mouth dropped open. He went completely motionless.

"That constitutes the unauthorized theft and attempted distribution of restricted Department of Defense property," Reynolds declared, leaning over the table. "That is a federal felony, Kyle."

"No! No, please!" Kyle broke down, tears streaming down his face as he panicked. "I didn't know what was in those files! I just thought I could make some quick cash! I swear!"

"You thought you were invincible because your father wore a badge," Reynolds said coldly. "You thought rules didn't apply to the Hale family. But now, your father is going to federal prison, and you are looking at a grand jury indictment unless you cooperate fully with the investigation into his police corruption."

Kyle buried his face in his hands, weeping hysterically on the metal table. The arrogant, recording teenager who had laughed at his stepsister while she was cuffed on the floor was gone, completely crushed by the reality of his own greed and stupidity.
