Chapter 3 - The ICU Siege

By mid-morning, Greenwich Hospital felt less like a medical facility and more like a battleground.
Julian lay in Room 412 of the Intensive Care Unit, hooked to a ventilator, a complex array of monitors displaying his volatile heart rhythm. The doctors had placed him in a medically induced coma to prevent further neurological damage from the severe seizure he had suffered.
In the private waiting room down the hall, Eleanor Vance sat in a wheelchair, an IV drip hooked to her arm. Despite her pale skin and fragile appearance, her eyes burned with the ruthless authority she had exercised over the Vance family for forty years.
"You're a monster, Clara," Eleanor spat at me the second the nurses left the room. "You did something to him. Julian was fine until he ate dinner at home last night!"
I sat across from her, holding a cup of black coffee, completely unbothered by her venom.
"Julian was having an affair with your younger son's wife, Eleanor," I said, my voice cold and crisp. "And you paid for her designer bags to keep her quiet about Julian’s illegal construction kickbacks. If anyone destroyed Julian, it was you."
"You know nothing about what it takes to protect an empire!" Eleanor hissed, leaning forward in her wheelchair. "The Vance family built half of southern Connecticut! Do you think empires are built on sweet promises and squeaky-clean accounting? Julian did what was necessary to save Vance Enterprises from bankruptcy after your late father-in-law's bad investments!"
"By risking the lives of thousands of people in uncertified high-rises?" I countered, raising an eyebrow. "By letting Ethan take the blame if the state inspectors noticed?"
"Ethan is weak!" Eleanor snapped without a shred of motherly remorse. "He’s an academic! He doesn't have the stomach for real business! Julian is the backbone of this family!"
The door to the waiting room swung open, and Arthur Pendelton—the Vance family's chief corporate counsel—stepped inside, looking deeply rattled. He carried a heavy leather briefcase and closed the door firmly behind him.
"Eleanor, Clara," Arthur said, his voice clipped. "We have a massive situation. The FBI’s White-Collar Crime Division just served a search warrant on the Vance Enterprises headquarters in Manhattan. They’ve frozen all corporate liquidity and seized the central servers."
Eleanor’s hand flew to her throat. "The servers? On what authority?!"
"An anonymous whistleblower delivered an unredacted copy of the Hudson Towers concrete audit to the United States Attorney's Office at 6:00 AM today," Arthur revealed, looking directly at me.
Eleanor turned her gaze toward me with pure, unadulterated hatred. "You. You called the feds."
"I didn't need to call them, Eleanor," I lied smoothly, keeping my face entirely unreadable. "When Julian collapsed, the police took his personal phone and laptop into evidence. His entire life was stored on those drives."
In truth, while the paramedics were working on Julian in Sienna's room, I had used Julian's primary laptop—which he had left unlocked in his study—to forward every single internal audit, offshore transaction log, and forged engineering permit to my personal secure server and three major regulatory agencies.
I wasn't going to wait for Eleanor to sweep his crimes under the rug. I was going to burn the rug, the floor, and the entire house down with them inside it.
"Arthur," Eleanor ordered, her voice trembling with fury. "Get Julian’s power of attorney papers executed immediately. Transfer his voting shares in Vance Enterprises to me before the board convenes at noon."
"I can't do that, Eleanor," Arthur said softly, shaking his head. "Julian is legally incapacitated. And under the terms of your late husband's trust, if Julian becomes incapacitated without a designated corporate proxy, his voting shares automatically revert to his legal spouse."
Eleanor froze.

I slowly set my coffee cup down on the glass table, looking at my mother-in-law with a calm, triumphant smile.
"That means I control Vance Enterprises now, Eleanor," I said. "And my first act as majority shareholder will be full, total cooperation with the federal government."
