Chapter 4 - The War in the Boardroom

At 1:00 p.m., the executive boardroom on the 42nd floor of Vance Tower in Midtown Manhattan was a pressure cooker.
The fourteen members of the board of directors sat around a polished mahogany table, their faces pale as they stared at the television screens mounted on the wall. Cable news channels were running breaking news banners: GREENWICH TYCOON IN COMA AMID MASSIVE BUILDING FRAUD INVESTIGATION.
When I walked into the room, flanked by my personal attorney, Victoria Sterling, and Ethan, the room fell into instant, tense silence.
"Mrs. Vance," senior board member Charles Montgomery said, standing up. "This company is facing an existential crisis. The Department of Justice has halted construction on three of our flagship residential towers. Our stock is down forty percent in pre-market trading! Where is Eleanor?"
"Eleanor Vance is currently under observation at Greenwich Hospital," I announced, taking the center seat at the head of the table—Julian’s seat. "And Julian Vance is in a medically induced coma following a toxicological collapse."
Whispers erupted across the table.
"Then who is running this meeting?" another director demanded. "We need to appoint an interim CEO immediately to issue a public statement denying these federal allegations!"
"You will not be issuing any denials," I said, my voice striking the room like a steel hammer. "Because the allegations are completely true."
I motioned to Victoria, who distributed thick bound folders to every director at the table.
"Inside those folders," Victoria explained, "are the real, unedited laboratory test results for the concrete used in the foundations of Hudson Towers, Grand Vista, and The Sterling Plaza. Julian Vance, in collusion with certain senior procurement officers, siphoned sixty million dollars from the construction budget into offshore accounts while using low-grade, porous concrete that violates state building codes."
The directors scrambled through the pages, gasping as they read the damning structural reports.
"My God..." Charles Montgomery muttered, slumping back into his chair. "If these structures settle, they could experience catastrophic structural failure within five years. We’re looking at criminal negligence, corporate manslaughter, total bankruptcy!"
"Not if we act right now," I said, leaning forward and resting my hands on the table. "Ethan Vance is a certified structural engineer with an impeccable record. He had no knowledge of his brother's fraudulent substitutions. As of this moment, Ethan is assuming the role of Chief Operating Officer and Head of Structural Remediation."
Ethan stepped forward, opening his own set of blueprints on the digital projector screen.
"I have already designed a carbon-fiber reinforcement plan for Hudson Towers," Ethan said, his voice confident and clear. "We will voluntarily halt sales, evacuate the lower levels for ninety days, and execute a full internal retrofit at our own expense. We will self-report every violation to the Department of Housing and Urban Development before they issue a mandatory injunction."
"That will cost seventy million dollars!" Charles yelled. "Where do we get that kind of capital with our assets frozen?!"
"From Julian Vance's personal estate, Eleanor Vance's private trust, and the clawback of all executive bonuses paid over the last four years," I answered without hesitation. "We save this company by telling the truth, fixing the buildings, and handing the guilty parties over to the authorities. Anyone on this board who opposes this plan will be named as an co-conspirator in the federal indictment by five o'clock today."
The directors looked at one another, seeing the cold, unyielding determination in my eyes. They realized in that instant that the quiet, passive wife who had spent six years hosting dinner parties in Greenwich was dead.
May you like
In her place stood a woman who had taken control of their empire, and who was prepared to crush anyone who stood in her way.
Unanimously, fourteen hands went up in favor of my motion.
