Chapter 3 - The Bail Hearing Shock

Three days later, the Cook County Judicial Center was packed with reporters and legal teams. The news of the high-profile arrest of wealthy socialite Diane Harrison and her daughter Ashley for the brutal assault and robbery attempt at the Harrison estate had leaked to the press, creating a media frenzy.
Michael walked into the courtroom wearing a tailored navy suit, looking immaculate and stoic. Beside him sat Arthur Pendelton. In the gallery behind them sat several private security guards protecting Emma, who had been discharged from the hospital that morning in a wheelchair, determined to witness the proceedings herself.
On the defense side, a renowned criminal defense attorney named Richard Sterling stood beside Diane and Ashley. Both women were wearing bright orange prison jumpsuits, hands cuffed at their waists. Diane looked visibly aged, her manicured facade entirely shattered, while Ashley wept quietly, staring blankly at the floor.
"All rise for Judge Brenda Holloway," the bailiff announced.
Judge Holloway, a stern woman in her late fifties known for her zero-tolerance stance on domestic violence, took the bench and scanned the case files before her.
"We are here for the bail hearing of Diane Harrison and Ashley Harrison," Judge Holloway declared. "Charges filed by the State include First-Degree Aggravated Assault, Home Invasion, Attempted Grand Larceny, Corporate Sabotage, and Reckless Endangerment of an Unborn Child. Prosecutor, state your stance."
The Assistant State’s Attorney stepped forward. "Your Honor, the State strongly requests that both defendants be held without bail. We have clear digital evidence, including high-definition video captured by the victim's husband, showing a prolonged physical assault on a three-month pregnant woman, alongside active burglary attempts. Furthermore, both defendants present an extreme flight risk due to substantial foreign financial ties."
Richard Sterling, the defense attorney, immediately stepped to the podium. "Your Honor! This is an egregious exaggeration of a tragic family misunderstanding! My client, Mrs. Diane Harrison, was suffering from a severe manic episode brought on by medication changes. She entered the home concerned for her daughter-in-law's mental health. A verbal altercation ensued, and things unfortunately spiraled out of hand. Mrs. Harrison is a pillar of the community, a philanthropist, and a grieving mother!"
Hearing this sickening spin, Emma gripped the armrests of her wheelchair, her knuckles turning white. Michael reached back, gently resting his hand over hers to keep her grounded.
"A pillar of the community?" Judge Holloway asked dryly, raising an eyebrow. "Mr. Sterling, does your 'pillar of the community' usually carry a claw hammer to check on her daughter-in-law's health?"
A murmur of muffled laughter rippled through the courtroom gallery.
"Your Honor," Sterling pushed on, sweating under his collar. "We request bail set at a reasonable amount. Mrs. Harrison’s family—specifically her son, Michael Harrison, the CEO of Harrison Enterprises—has the financial capacity to post bond and ensure home confinement."
Arthur Pendelton immediately stood up from the prosecution table. "If I may, Your Honor. I represent Mr. Michael Harrison directly. My client wishes to make a formal statement to the court regarding bail."
Judge Holloway looked at Michael. "Mr. Harrison, you may approach."
Michael stood up, unbuttoning his jacket, and walked to the podium. His presence was commanding, filling the silent courtroom. He didn't offer even a glance toward his mother or sister.
"Your Honor," Michael began, his voice echoing clearly off the marble walls. "The defense counsel suggests that I will post bail for the defendants. I wish to state unequivocally on the public record that I will not be providing a single dollar, nor any real estate collateral, for either Diane Harrison or Ashley Harrison."
Diane gasped loudly. "Michael! How can you say that?! I'm your mother!"
"Silence in the court!" Judge Holloway banged her gavel sharply. "Continue, Mr. Harrison."
"Furthermore," Michael continued coldly, "I have formally filed for a permanent order of protection on behalf of myself, my wife Emma Harrison, and our unborn child. I have also submitted evidence to the State Attorney’s Office detailing a multi-month campaign of systematic poisoning, extortion, and corporate theft orchestrated by both defendants in collusion with a rival corporate entity, Apex Global."
The courtroom gasped. The journalists in the front row began scribbling furiously on their notepad pads.
"My wife lies in a medical facility recovering from severe injuries that nearly cost us our child," Michael said, turning his head slowly to lock eyes with Diane for the very first time. "The women standing in orange suits are not my family. They are dangerous felons who belong behind bars."
Diane’s face transformed from desperate sorrow to ugly rage. "You ungrateful bastard!" she screamed, lunging against her restraints, her voice echoing maniacally. "I made you! You were nothing without my guidance! You gave everything to that common, worthless girl! You’ll regret this, Michael! I’ll make sure you lose everything!"
Ashley began wailing hysterically. "Mom, shut up! Please, stop talking!"
Judge Holloway banged her gavel repeatedly. "Order! Order in this court! Bail is DENIED for both defendants! They will remain in custody at the Cook County Department of Corrections pending trial!"
As the court bailiffs grabbed Diane and Ashley to drag them out toward the holding cells, Diane continued to scream curses, her manic rants confirming her guilt to every reporter in the room.
Michael walked back to Emma’s wheelchair, knelt down, and squeezed her hands gently. "Step one is complete," he whispered.

Emma looked at him, her heart lighter for the first time in months, but she knew the fight was far from over. "What about Julian Vance?" she asked quietly.
Michael’s eyes darkened into cold steel. "He’s next."
