Chapter 7 - The Final Trial

Six months later.

The Cook County Criminal Courthouse was filled to capacity for the trial of State of Illinois v. Diane Harrison. Julian Vance had already pleaded guilty in federal court to racketeering and was currently serving a fifteen-year sentence in a federal penitentiary. Ashley Harrison had taken her plea deal and was awaiting sentencing. Only Diane Harrison had refused to plead, stubbornly maintaining her innocence and insisting that her son would break down and rescue her in open court.

Diane sat at the defense table dressed in a plain grey jumpsuit, her hands handcuffed to a heavy leather belt around her waist. Her eyes darted around the courtroom, desperately seeking out Michael.

When the heavy doors at the back of the courtroom opened, a murmur swept through the gallery.

Michael Harrison walked in, looking striking and composed. Beside him, leaning gently on his arm, was Emma. She looked radiant, wearing an elegant light blue maternity dress that accentuated her full, eight-month pregnant belly. Her skin was glowing, the scars of the past fully healed, replaced by an aura of maternal strength.

Diane stared at Emma’s bump, her eyes widening with a mixture of shock, jealousy, and bitterness.

The trial proceeded with ruthless efficiency. The prosecution called witness after witness: the paramedic who treated Emma’s injuries, the forensic technician who extracted the claw hammer's fingerprints, and the doctor who analyzed the chemical toxins found in Emma’s bloodwork.

Then came the prosecution’s star witness: Ashley Harrison.

Ashley took the stand dressed in prison blues, keeping her eyes fixed strictly on the floor to avoid her mother’s deadly glare. Under oath, Ashley recounted every detail of the plot—how Diane had orchestrated the break-in, how she had purchased the emetics, how she planned to force Emma to sign away custody of the child, and how they intended to sell the company's stolen data to Julian Vance.

"Did your mother ever show remorse for what she was doing to Emma Harrison?" the prosecutor asked.

"No," Ashley sobbed into the microphone. "Mom said... she said Emma was a parasite who didn't deserve Michael’s wealth. She said... if the baby was lost in the struggle, it was better because we could control Michael easier if he didn't have a family of his own."

A gasping shudder went through the jury box. Several jurors glared at Diane with visible disgust.

Diane burst out from her seat, rattling her chains. "You lying little traitor! I gave you everything! You worthless child!"

"Order!" Judge Holloway slammed her gavel down fiercely. "Defendant will remain seated and quiet, or I will have her gagged for the remainder of these proceedings!"

Finally, the prosecution called Michael Harrison to the stand.

Michael walked to the witness box with steady steps, placed his hand on the Bible, and swore to tell the truth. He testified clearly, recounting the horrific scene he witnessed at 1:47 a.m. when he walked into his bedroom.

The prosecutor turned to Michael. "Mr. Harrison, the defense claims that your mother acted out of concern for your wellbeing and was merely embroiled in a heated family disagreement. What do you say to that?"

Michael looked directly into the eyes of the twelve jurors. "A mother who loves her son does not attempt to murder his wife. A mother who respects her family does not try to kill her unborn grandchild for gambling money. The woman sitting at that table destroyed her right to be called my mother the second she raised her hand against my family."

When Michael stepped down from the stand, the prosecution rested its case. The defense offered no witnesses—Richard Sterling knew any further attempt to defend Diane would only worsen her fate.

The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.

When they returned, the jury foreperson stood up. "On count one, Aggravated Assault on a Pregnant Victim: Guilty. On count two, First-Degree Burglary: Guilty. On count three, Corporate Espionage and Theft: Guilty. On count four, Attempted Involuntary Termination of Pregnancy: Guilty."

Diane slumped back in her chair, her face draining of all color.

Judge Holloway looked down at Diane with absolute disdain. "Diane Harrison, your actions represent the absolute pinnacle of human greed, cruelty, and betrayal. You showed zero mercy to an innocent, pregnant young woman who welcomed you into her home. The law will show you no mercy in return."

Judge Holloway struck her gavel. "I sentence you to twenty-eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, without the possibility of parole for the first twenty years."

As the guards moved in to haul Diane away, she finally broke down into genuine, hysterical weeping, realizing that her life of luxury, privilege, and control was over forever. As she was dragged through the side door, she looked at Michael one last time, crying out his name, but Michael simply turned his back on her, wrapping his arm around Emma’s shoulders as they walked out of the courtroom into the bright sunlight.
