Chapter 4 - The Corporate Trap

The high-rise headquarters of Vance & Associates in downtown Chicago boasted panoramic views of Lake Michigan. Julian Vance, a ruthless corporate raider in his mid-fifties, leaned back in his leather chair, swirling a glass of scotch. Sitting across from him was his chief intelligence officer, Marcus Cole.

"Any word from Ashley?" Julian asked, frowning slightly. "She was supposed to deliver the transit tender master key three days ago."

"Sir, there’s been a massive complication," Marcus replied nervously, sliding a newspaper across the desk. The front page featured a bold headline: LOGISTICS TYCOON'S MOTHER AND SISTER ARRESTED IN BRUTAL HOME INVASION.

Julian glanced at the article, his eyebrows lifting in mild amusement before settling into frustration. "Fools. Amateurs. I told that stupid girl not to engage in domestic antics. Did they manage to pull our company name into the police record?"

"Not yet," Marcus said. "The news reports suggest it was purely a domestic dispute over family wealth and gold bullion. However, Ashley and Diane are locked up without bail. We haven't been able to retrieve the drive containing the bidding algorithms."

Suddenly, Julian’s desk phone rang. He pressed the speaker button. "Speak."

"Mr. Vance, I have Mr. Michael Harrison on line one," his secretary announced. "He says it’s regarding an urgent, private corporate matter."

Julian signaled to Marcus to stay quiet, poured another splash of scotch, and took the call with an overly smooth tone. "Michael! What a surprise. I heard about the... dreadful domestic news regarding your family. My deepest condolences. Terrible thing when family turns on you."

"Save the fake sympathy, Julian," Michael’s voice came through crisp and steady. "I’m calling because I know what Ashley was doing."

Julian’s hand froze over his glass. "I’m not sure I follow you, Michael."

"Let’s not play games," Michael said coolly. "Ashley left a trail of encrypted messages on my home server. I know she offered you our Illinois Transit bid key in exchange for funding her shell corporation and wiping my mother’s offshore debts."

Julian’s eyes narrowed into slit-like slits. He motioned for Marcus to trace the call, but Michael was already ahead of him.

"Don't bother trying to deny it," Michael continued. "Ashley was caught before she could hand over the final master key. But here’s the interesting part: I haven't handed those encrypted chat logs over to the Department of Justice yet."

Julian sat up straight, his corporate instinct taking over. "Why wouldn't you? If you have evidence of corporate espionage, you'd throw me to the wolves."

"Because I’m a businessman, Julian," Michael answered smoothly. "If I report this now, the State will freeze the entire Illinois Transit tender process for months while investigating both our firms. That tender represents eighty million dollars. I can't afford a delay, and neither can you."

"What are you proposing?" Julian asked, his curiosity piqued despite his suspicion.

"A private buy-out," Michael stated. "You buy my proprietary algorithm key directly from me, under the table, for twenty million cash. You win the state contract cleanly, I walk away with guaranteed capital to expand my international shipping lines, and I keep your name completely out of the criminal indictment against my sister."

Julian remained silent, calculating the numbers rapidly. Twenty million was steep, but securing the eighty-million-dollar state contract guaranteed Apex Global dominance in the Midwest sector for the next decade. More importantly, it eliminated the threat of federal prison for corporate espionage.

"How do I know the key is authentic and hasn't been altered?" Julian asked cautiously.

"We meet tonight at midnight. The private air hangar at Palwaukee Airport," Michael said. "You bring the verified offshore transfer confirmation; I bring the hard drive. You verify the code live on a secure terminal. We shake hands, and we never speak again."

"Midnight," Julian agreed. "I’ll be there."

When the call disconnected, Julian looked at Marcus and grinned coldly. "He’s desperate. His wife is battered, his family is in prison, and his company is hemorrhaging cash from the scandal. He wants a quick exit."

"Are we actually paying him the twenty million?" Marcus asked.

"Of course not," Julian sneered, pulling a small silver firearm from his desk drawer. "Once we verify the encryption key on that drive, Mr. Harrison will suffer a tragic, stress-induced 'accident' at that empty hangar. Make sure our security team is fully prepped."

Meanwhile, back at his private estate office, Michael removed his headset and looked up at Private Investigator Mercer and Detective Vance, who had been listening to every word of the recorded call.

"He took the bait," Michael declared.

Detective Vance adjusted her belt. "The federal wiretap mandate is signed. We’ll have a SWAT unit stationed inside the adjacent hangar bays by 10:00 PM. The moment Julian Vance confirms he is purchasing stolen state tender data on tape, we move in."

Emma stepped into the office, leaning lightly on a walking cane. She walked over to Michael, wrapping her arms around his waist from behind. "Be careful tonight, Mike."

Michael turned around, pulling her close, placing a gentle kiss on her brow. "This ends tonight, sweetheart. For you, for me, and for our baby."
