Chapter 4 - The Fall of the House of Ashford

Courtroom 305 of the Leighton Criminal Court Building was packed with reporters, court observers, and high-powered attorneys.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Adrian on my left and Sarah Sterling on my right. Two discreet, broad-shouldered Moretti security guards stood at the aisle entrances, ensuring no one approached us.
At precisely nine-fifteen AM, the side door clicked open, and Travis was led into the courtroom in bright orange prison scrubs, his hands cuffed at his waist and legs shackled. His split lip was stitched, and a dark bruise covered his left cheekbone where Adrian had struck him.
He looked around the gallery with arrogant defiance, his eyes sweeping past the news cameras until they locked onto me.
A sneer curled his lips. He leaned over to his attorney, Richard Cole, whispering loudly, "Look at her. She brought her new boyfriend. Tell him to enjoy his lawsuit."
"Silence in the court!" the bailiff barked as Judge Elena Gomez—a stern, sharp-eyed woman in her fifties—took the bench.
"Case number 26-CR-88412," the clerk announced. "People of the State of Illinois versus Travis Ashford. Charges: Aggravated Battery, Domestic Battery by Strangulation, Violation of an Order of Protection, Child Endangerment."
Richard Cole stepped up to the podium, adjusting his gold cufflinks. "Your Honor, my client is a respected business owner and the nephew of Senior Circuit Judge Thomas Ashford. The events at the supermarket yesterday were a tragic misunderstanding involving an unprovoked attack by an unregistered private security operative—"
"Mr. Cole," Judge Gomez interrupted, her voice sharp as glass. "Before you proceed, I suggest you look at the back of the courtroom."
The heavy oak doors at the rear of the courtroom swung open.
Four uniformed United States Marshals walked down the center aisle. Between them walked Judge Thomas Ashford—wearing a dark wool overcoat, his hands cuffed in front of his waist, his head bowed in deep humiliation as news camera flashes strobed through the glass windows.
A collective gasp swept through the gallery like a shockwave.
Travis’s jaw dropped. His face went completely white, his eyes wide with absolute, paralyzed horror. "Uncle Thomas...?"
"Judge Thomas Ashford was taken into federal custody twenty minutes ago on charges of judicial corruption, racketeering, and obstruction of justice," Judge Gomez stated coldly from the bench. "And as for this court, Mr. Cole, I have reviewed the high-definition audio and video footage from the venue."
Judge Gomez leaned forward, staring directly down at Travis.
"Mr. Ashford, the video shows you striking Miss Ashford across the face, strangling her until she lost consciousness, and threatening two five-year-old children. Your actions were cowardly, brutal, and utterly indefensible."
"Your Honor, please!" Cole stammered, sweating profusely under his collar. "My client is willing to surrender his passport, post two hundred thousand dollars cash bail—"
"Bail is denied," Judge Gomez cut in firmly, slamming her gavel down with a sharp crack that echoed off the marble walls. "The defendant will remain in custody at the Cook County Department of Corrections pending trial. Court is adjourned."
"No! No!" Travis screamed, thrashing against his shackles as two bailiffs grabbed his arms. "Camille! You bitch! You did this! You ruined my family!"
He turned his bloodshot eyes toward Adrian, who was standing calmly beside me, his hand resting supportively against the small of my back.
"Who the hell are you?!" Travis roared as he was pulled toward the holding cells. "Who do you think you are?!"
Adrian didn't raise his voice. He didn't sneer. He simply looked at Travis with cold, absolute disdain.
"I am the man who is taking everything you stole from her," Adrian said softly, his voice carrying clearly across the silent courtroom.
The heavy steel doors slammed shut behind Travis, cutting off his screams forever.
I stood beside Adrian, watching the empty doorway. The nightmare that had plagued my life for five years had finally been broken in a single, decisive morning.
I turned to face Adrian. Tears blurred my vision, but for the first time in years, they were tears of overwhelming, beautiful freedom.

"It's over," I whispered.
"It's over, Camille," Adrian said softly, reaching out to gently wipe a tear from my cheek with his thumb. "Now, your real life begins."
