Chapter 9 - The Ring in the Snow

Two weeks later. Christmas Eve.

A gentle, powdery snow fell over the Gold Coast brownstone, blanketing the courtyard in a pristine layer of white.

Inside, the grand living room was warm and cozy, filled with the scent of pine needles, roasting chestnuts, and hot chocolate. A twelve-foot Christmas tree stood by the bay window, covered in antique glass ornaments and glowing white fairy lights.

Josie and Willa had spent the evening opening presents—dollhouses, art sets, winter boots, and storybooks—and were now fast asleep on the plush wool rug in front of the fireplace, wrapped in matching plaid blankets, holding their new stuffed bears.

I sat on the velvet sofa, wearing a warm cream cable-knit sweater, watching the flames crackle against the hearth.

Adrian stepped into the room carrying two glasses of spiced mulled wine. He handed one to me and sat down beside me, wrapping his arm around my shoulders, pulling me close into his warm embrace.

I rested my head against his shoulder, taking a sip of the warm wine, feeling a deep, profound peace settle over my soul.

"They had a good day," Adrian murmured softly, kissing the top of my head.

"They had a perfect day," I corrected gently, looking up into his face. "This entire year... it feels like a miracle, Adrian. A year ago today, I was sitting in a dark kitchen counting nickels to pay the heating bill, terrified of every shadow outside."

Adrian set his glass down on the coffee table. He turned to face me, taking both of my hands in his.

"Camille," Adrian said, his grey eyes shining in the warm firelight with an intensity that made my heart race. "When I stepped into that supermarket four months ago, I thought I was simply fulfilling a debt to your father. But the moment I held you in my arms, I realized that my life had been completely empty until you walked into it."

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, dark blue velvet box.

My hand flew to my mouth. Tears instantly welled in my eyes.

"Camille," Adrian whispered, opening the box to reveal a breathtaking, radiant-cut emerald ring surrounded by delicate pavé diamonds—a ring that reflected the green of my eyes and the golden light of the fire.

"You and the girls gave me a family," Adrian said, his voice thick with deep emotion. "You taught me that strength isn't about control or power, but about love and devotion. I want to build a life with you. I want to protect you, cherish you, and stand beside you for every sunrise and sunset for the rest of my days."

He slid off the sofa, dropping onto one knee in front of me on the rug, right beside our sleeping daughters.

"Camille Ashford," Adrian whispered, looking into my eyes with all the love in his soul. "Will you marry me?"

A happy sob burst from my chest. I threw my arms around his neck, pulling him close, kissing his lips with all the passion, gratitude, and love that had filled my heart over these past months.

"Yes!" I sobbed happily against his mouth. "Yes, Adrian! A thousand times yes!"

May you like

Adrian let out a breathless laugh, sliding the breathtaking emerald ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly, sparkling brilliantly in the firelight.

He pulled me down onto the rug with him, holding me tight in his arms as the snow fell softly outside the frost-kissed windows of our home.
