Chapter 7 - The Price of Protection

The rain lashed against the office windows with a furious roar.
I stared at the barrel of the revolver, my mind racing through every survival instinct I had learned over five years of living in fear.
"Victoria," I said softly, keeping my hands flat on the desk where she could see them. "If you shoot me here, you will never leave this building. The elevator requires a security key code after seven PM. The stairwell doors are locked from the outside."
"I don't care about leaving, Camille!" Victoria shrieked, her hand shaking violently on the trigger. "My life is already over!"
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the private executive suite behind my desk swung open.
Adrian stepped into the office.
He didn't scream. He didn't rush forward. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, his dark tie loosened slightly. His expression was utterly, terrifyingly calm.
"Put the gun down, Victoria," Adrian said softly, his voice echoing in the quiet office like a thunderclap.
Victoria whipped her head around, aiming the revolver at Adrian's chest. "Moretti! Back up! Back up or I shoot her right now!"
Adrian didn't back up. He walked slowly, deliberately around my desk, stepping directly into the line of fire, placing his broad frame between Victoria’s gun and my body.
"Adrian, no!" I gasped, trying to pull him back.
Adrian gently reached behind his back, pressing his palm reassuringly against my hip, keeping me safely behind him.
"You're not going to shoot her, Victoria," Adrian said, taking another calm step toward the armed woman. "Because if you pull that trigger, you won't live long enough to hear the bullet hit the wall."
"You think you're invincible because of your money?!" Victoria spat, tears of rage spilling down her wrinkled face. "You took my son from me!"
"Your son choked the mother of his children in a public supermarket," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a register of icy, terrifying absolute truth. "Your family was a disease in this city, Victoria. You preyed on the weak, bought off judges, and beat women who couldn't fight back."
He took another step forward. He was now less than three feet from the barrel of the gun.
"Shoot me, Victoria," Adrian said softly, his grey eyes locking onto hers with an unflinching, lethal intensity. "Shoot me and see what happens to the rest of your family tomorrow morning."
Victoria’s hands shook uncontrollably. The sheer, overwhelming aura of absolute power and fearlessness radiating from Adrian broke what little resolve she had left.
"You... you monster..." she whimpered.
In a flash of lightning speed, Adrian’s hand shot forward. He grabbed the barrel of the revolver, twisting it upward while his left palm struck Victoria’s wrist with a sharp, lethal precision.
The gun dropped onto the hardwood floor with a loud clatter.
Before Victoria could react, Vance and three Moretti security officers burst into the room, tackling her to the floor and securing her arms behind her back in handcuffs.
"Clear the floor," Vance ordered sharply into his lapel radio. "Notify the State Police. Attempted murder charges."
Victoria wept hysterically as she was pulled up and dragged out of the office, her screams fading down the corridor.
The room fell quiet again, save for the sound of the rain beating against the glass.
Adrian turned around slowly. He looked at me, his grey eyes searching my face for any sign of injury.
"Are you hurt, Camille?" he asked, his voice trembling slightly with an emotion he couldn't hide.
I didn't answer. I threw my arms around his neck, burying my face into his shoulder, holding him with all the strength in my body. His strong arms wrapped tightly around my waist, pulling me lift off the floor, holding me close against his chest as if he would never let me go again.

"I'm fine," I sobbed into his neck. "I'm fine... because you came."
"I will always come for you, Camille," Adrian whispered into my hair, his chest heaving against mine. "Always."
