Chapter 2 - The Panic at Cole Tower

The black Maybach bulletproof sedan tore through the Holland Tunnel at ninety miles per hour, its engine roaring like a caged beast.

I sat in the back seat wedged between Leo and Wren, while Finn slept with his head pillowed heavily on my lap, exhausted by the sudden chaos of the park. Damian sat across from me in the leather-lined cabin, his laptop open on his knees, his fingers flying across the keyboard with a terrifying speed. Vanessa sat up front in the passenger seat, silent, trembling, staring straight ahead as if paralyzed by the sudden collapse of her world.

"Slow down, driver," I said sharply, bracing myself as the car took a sharp turn toward lower Manhattan. "You're scaring the children."

Damian didn't look up from his screen. "He's driving at my explicit instruction. We aren't going to your apartment in Queens, Elena."

"Excuse me?" I bristled, my protective instincts flaring hot. "You have no right to dictate where we go! Pull over right now, or I swear to God—"

"Your apartment has already been compromised," Damian interrupted quietly, his voice dangerously calm. He turned the laptop screen toward me.

On the display was a live security feed of my third-floor walk-up in Astoria. Two men in dark suits—men wearing the distinct lapel pins of Cole Corporation private security—were standing outside my apartment door, picking the lock with practiced efficiency.

My breath caught in my throat. "How... how did they find us so fast?"

"Because my grandfather's security network monitors every financial transaction, every public transit card swipe, and every cell tower ping within a five-mile radius of Manhattan," Damian said bitterly, slamming the laptop shut. "The moment my card was used for coffee near Central Park, the system flagged my proximity to three minors matching genetic markers registered in our private medical database."

"Genetic markers?" I stared at him in horror. "You tracked our DNA?"

"Not intentionally," Damian explained, rubbing his temples in exhaustion. "Every Cole heir's birth is logged into the family's private medical registry at birth for insurance and security protocols. When your children had their routine vaccinations at the community clinic in Queens last year, the clinic's network—which was quietly bought out by a Cole subsidiary six months ago—flagged a ninety-nine point eight percent match to my paternal DNA profile."

The sheer, suffocating scope of the Cole empire closed in around me. There was no running from them. There never had been.

"So what do you want?" I asked, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to sound brave. "Are you going to take them from me? Are you going to use your lawyers, your judges, your billions of dollars to strip my children away because I'm just a nobody from Queens?"

Damian finally looked up, his gray eyes burning with a desperate, intense fury that shocked me. He leaned forward, catching my gaze and holding it with absolute conviction.

"Listen to me, Elena," he said, his voice dropping into a harsh, solemn vow. "Four years ago, I let my grandfather dictate my life. I let him push you away because I was weak, because I thought I could build an empire first and protect you later. Look at where that got us."

He reached out, his hand hovering inches from my cheek before he caught himself and pulled back, resting his fist on his knee.

"My grandfather didn't just steal my wife and my children," Damian continued, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "He declared war. And I am going to burn his entire legacy to the ground before I ever let anyone lay a finger on my family again."

Vanessa turned around from the front seat, her face pale, her voice shaking. "Damian... your grandfather built this company from the ground up. If you go to war with him, he will strip you of your title, your shares, your seat on the board. You'll be ruined!"

"Let him try," Damian replied coldly. "I was never more than a placeholder to him anyway. But Leo, Wren, and Finn? They bear my name, whether you like it or not. And by tonight, the entire world is going to know that the Cole dynasty has three new heirs."

The Maybach slowed down, turning sharply down a subterranean ramp beneath the towering, monolithic glass-and-steel structure of Cole Tower in the Financial District.

The heavy steel security gates parted automatically as the vehicle approached, but as soon as we rolled inside the private underground garage, I noticed something was wrong.

There were no valets. There were no attendants.

Instead, four black SUVs blocked the exit ramp, their high-beam headlights blindingly bright, casting long, menacing shadows across the concrete floor. Standing in front of them were six men in heavy tactical gear—and standing in the center, leaning heavily on an ebony cane with a gold wolf-head handle, was Arthur Cole.
