Chapter 8 - The Final Confession

Damian didn't offer her a seat. He stood rigidly by the mahogany desk, his arms crossed over his chest, his expression carved out of stone.
"What do you want, Vanessa?" Damian asked, his voice entirely devoid of warmth.
Vanessa swallowed hard, her hands trembling as she clutched a leather handbag against her chest. "Your grandfather... after the board ousted him, he didn't just go quietly into retirement, Damian. He started liquidating private holdings through offshore accounts. Holdings that my family’s trust had co-invested in."
"That's a civil dispute between your family and Arthur," Damian replied coldly. "Take it to your family lawyers."
"I can't!" Vanessa’s voice cracked, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "My father was tied up in your grandfather's shell companies. When the federal audit hit, our entire estate was frozen. My family is ruined, Damian. Bankrupt. My father had a stroke this morning when the asset seizure notice was delivered."
I watched her from across the room, feeling a sudden, sharp pang of pity. Say what you want about Vanessa’s arrogance and high-society entitlement, but she had been nothing more than another pawn in Arthur Cole’s ruthless game of chess—just like Damian and I had been four years ago.
"I'm sorry about your father, Vanessa," I said quietly, stepping forward.
She turned her tear-streaked eyes toward me, blinking in surprise that I would speak to her with kindness.
"I didn't come here to ask for charity," Vanessa whispered, pulling a sealed manila envelope from her handbag and placing it gently on the edge of the desk. "Before my father collapsed... he gave me this. He said Arthur Cole kept a private record of every transaction, every forced resignation, and every secret engineered by the family trust over the last thirty years."
Damian’s eyes narrowed. He reached out, picked up the envelope, and broke the wax seal. He pulled out a stack of folded documents, his eyes scanning the typewritten pages with mounting intensity.
"What is it?" I asked softly, stepping to his side.
"It's the missing link," Damian murmured, his voice laced with absolute vindication. "Every illegal wiretap, every fabricated medical report from the hospital when I was in a coma, every bribed judge and coerced signature... it's all here. Signed in my grandfather's own handwriting."
He looked up at Vanessa, his expression softening just a fraction. "Why are you giving this to us, Vanessa? With this evidence, you could leverage your family's position with the federal prosecutors."
May you like
"Because I'm done playing your grandfather's games," Vanessa said bitterly, turning toward the elevator lobby. "And because... unlike Arthur Cole, at least you two actually survived him."
The elevator doors closed silently behind her, leaving us alone in the sunlit study with the final, rotting secrets of the Cole dynasty laid bare on the desk.
