Chapter 10 - BRIGHT HORIZONS

Two years later.
The summer sun warm on the terrace of Claire’s historic lakefront home. The old, cold formality that had once defined the house was completely gone, replaced by the sound of music, laughter, and life.
In the backyard, a long wooden dining table was set for a festive evening celebration. Julian stood near the grill with his younger brother, laughing as they cooked dinner, while Lily, now thirteen, sat on the grass with her friends, designing posters for her upcoming regional dance competition.
Claire walked out onto the terrace wearing a simple, elegant white linen dress. Her hair fell naturally around her shoulders, and her skin held a healthy, radiant glow.
She walked over to the edge of the terrace and looked out at Lake Michigan, where the blue water stretched out to meet the clear summer sky.
Julian walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin softly against her shoulder.
"What are you thinking about?" Julian asked softly.
Claire leaned back against him, feeling the steady, reassuring beat of his heart.
"I was thinking about the night of the gala," Claire admitted with a gentle smile. "About how terrified I was when that dress fell off my shoulders."
"And now?" Julian asked, kissing her cheek.
"Now I realize that the dress was the only thing keeping me trapped," Claire said, turning in his arms to look up into his warm, loving eyes. "When they cut it away, they thought they were stripping me of my dignity. But all they really did was set me free."
From the yard below, Lily called out, "Mom! Julian! Dinner's ready!"
Claire smiled, taking Julian's hand as they walked down the stone steps together toward the table filled with family, laughter, and true love.
