Chapter 3 - THE FALLOUT IN REAL TIME

The silence in the Halston Grand Theater lasted for three agonizing seconds before absolute chaos erupted.
Reporters surged forward toward the stage, shouting questions at Grant and Vanessa over the noise of overlapping camera shutters. High-profile donors stood up from their seats, openly voicing their outrage at the betrayal captured on the giant screen.
"Mr. Whitmore! Did you use foundation funds to subsidize your real estate losses?"
"Ms. Cole! Is it true you assaulted Mrs. Whitmore before the performance?"
"Mrs. Whitmore! Are you filing criminal charges?"
Grant attempted to step between the reporters and Vanessa, but his voice was drowned out by the uproar. His face had gone pale, his hands trembling as he realized that every major news outlet in the Midwest was broadcasting his humiliation live.
Claire stood under the center spotlight, entirely unbothered by the chaos around her. She turned her back on Grant and Vanessa, looking down at the front row where Margaret Whitmore was attempting to push her way toward the VIP exit.
"Margaret," Claire’s voice carried clearly over the stage monitor speakers.
Margaret froze, turning slowly with an expression of pure rage and panic.
"The diamond necklace around Vanessa's neck," Claire said calmly. "The one you told me belonged strictly to the Whitmore family. You might want to ask your son where he got the funds to buy the replica Vanessa is wearing tonight. Because the original necklace was placed in a secure bank vault under my name three years ago."
Vanessa’s hands instantly flew to her throat. She looked at Grant in horror. "What? Grant, you said this was an heirloom!"
Grant looked like he was about to vomit. "Vanessa, shut up!"
Before Grant could take another step, two uniform officers from the Chicago Police Department stepped onto the stage from the right wings, accompanied by Daniel Brooks and the theater's head of security.
The lead officer walked straight past Grant and stopped directly in front of Vanessa.
"Vanessa Cole?" the officer asked sternly.
Vanessa backed away, her voice high and panicked. "What is the meaning of this? I didn't do anything!"
"We have reviewed the security footage of an assault and destruction of property inside Mrs. Whitmore's dressing room," the officer stated, producing a pair of handcuffs. "You are under arrest for criminal damage to property and misdemeanor assault. Step forward, please."
"No! Grant, do something!" Vanessa screamed as the officer pulled her arms behind her back and clicked the steel cuffs around her wrists. "Grant!"
Grant tried to step forward. "Officer, listen to me, I’m Grant Whitmore! This is a private family matter—"
"Step back, sir," the second officer warned firmly, placing a hand on his chest. "If you interfere with an arrest, you will be taken into custody for obstruction."
In front of eight hundred horrified members of Chicago high society, Vanessa Cole was escorted off the stage in handcuffs, her white silk dress rumpled, her head hung low as news cameras followed her every step down the center aisle.
Grant stood completely alone on the vast stage, surrounded by the giant screens displaying his wife's legal ownership of his prized foundation.
Claire looked at her husband one last time. Her voice was devoid of hate, revenge, or pain. It held only the absolute weight of finality.

"The locks on the house were changed two hours ago, Grant," Claire said softly into her lapel microphone so only he could hear. "Your belongings are currently sitting in storage crates at your office building. My attorney will serve your divorce papers at eight o'clock tomorrow morning."
She turned gracefully on her heel and walked off the stage, leaving Grant Whitmore standing under the glaring white lights in front of an audience that would never respect him again.
