Chapter 7 - THE TRIAL OF VANESSA COLE
Three months after the gala, the criminal trial of Vanessa Cole began at the Cook County Municipal Court.
The trial was a media circus. Vanessa arrived every day wearing conservative black dresses, attempting to portray herself as an innocent victim of a high-society misunderstanding. Her defense team argued that the destruction of Claire’s gown was an accidental tearing during a tense argument and that Claire had staged the security broadcast to destroy Vanessa's acting career.
On the third day of the trial, Claire took the witness stand.
Dressed in an elegant charcoal suit, her posture immaculate and her voice perfectly composed, Claire answered the prosecutor’s questions with absolute clarity.
"Mrs. Whitmore," the prosecutor asked, showing the court a photograph of the destroyed midnight-blue gown. "Did Ms. Cole express any regret or offer an apology after cutting your dress?"
"No," Claire replied calmly, looking directly at Vanessa. "She told me to leave through the service entrance because my husband would be walking onstage with her, and that no one wanted to see him beside a broken wife."
A soft murmur went through the jury box.
Vanessa’s defense attorney stood up to cross-examine. "Mrs. Whitmore, isn't it true that you deliberately chose to remain in the theater, put on a stage crew coat, and hide in the wings specifically to ambush my client during her speech?"
"I stayed in the theater because my eleven-year-old daughter was performing on stage," Claire answered smoothly, her eyes unyielding. "I put on the coat so my daughter wouldn't see her mother standing in a shredded dress minutes before she had to dance. I revealed the truth on stage because your client and my former husband were attempting to steal a non-profit organization dedicated to children."
The defense attorney tried to press further, but Claire’s answers were airtight, devoid of malice, and grounded entirely in fact.
The jury took less than two hours to reach a verdict.
"Guilty on all counts," the jury foreman announced. "Misdemeanor assault and felony criminal mischief."
The judge sentenced Vanessa Cole to six months of community service at a city shelter, two years of probation, and a mandatory restitution payment of $40,000 for the destruction of the custom gown and legal fees. Furthermore, the theatrical union officially revoked her acting credentials, effectively ending her career in professional entertainment.

As Vanessa was led out of the courtroom in tears, Grant sat in the back row, completely ignored by her and the press. He had spent his remaining liquid funds paying for her legal defense, only to watch her turn on him during her sentencing statement, blaming him for dragging her into his family feud.
Claire walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sun, feeling the final weight of the scandal lift from her shoulders.
