Chapter 3 - The Vanishing Act

By 7:00 AM, the hospital room became a pressure cooker.

Two detectives from the Portland Police Bureau, Detective Miller and Detective Hayes, arrived alongside Catherine Vance from CPS. They took statements regarding the hit-and-run, but when I mentioned that Rachel had been abducted from her home prior to the accident, their responses were frustratingly bureaucratic.

"Ms. Ellison, we sent a patrol car to the address Oliver provided on East Burnside," Detective Miller said, tapping his notepad. "The door was unlocked, yes, but the apartment was completely cleared out. No signs of struggle. No blood, no shell casings, no broken furniture. It looks like a simple midnight move."

"A midnight move?" I spat, keeping my voice low so Oliver wouldn't hear from the bathroom where a nurse was helping him dress. "His mother was dragged away while he fled down a fire escape! He was hit by a car while running for his life!"

"Or," Catherine Vance interrupted, "the mother abandoned the child due to financial strain, packed her bags, and fled the city. It happens more often than you think, Ms. Ellison."

"Rachel didn't abandon him!" I argued fiercely. "You don't know her!"

"And you haven't seen her in twelve years," Miller countered smoothly. "Look, Ms. Ellison, we are treating this as a missing persons case, but without physical evidence of a kidnapping, our hands are tied regarding immediate federal warrants. CPS is taking custody of the boy today."

"No," I said, stepping between the detective and the bathroom door. "I am applying for emergency temporary guardianship."

Catherine raised an eyebrow. "You’re a single woman living in a two-bedroom condo, working freelance restoration. You have no legal standing, no biological connection—"

"I have a stable income, a clean home, zero criminal record, and I am the only person in this city this traumatized eleven-year-old child trusts," I snapped, my eyes flashing with a fury I hadn't felt in a decade. "If you try to dump him into a group home or a stranger's house right now, I will bring my corporate legal team into this court by noon."

Before Catherine could reply, a tall, well-dressed man in a charcoal suit walked down the hallway, flanked by a private security guard. His silver hair was neatly combed, his gold cufflinks glinting under the lights.

My blood turned to liquid ice.

It was Julian Vance.

He looked older, thicker around the middle, but the arrogant, predatory glint in his eyes hadn't changed at all.

"Detectives," Julian said smoothly, stepping right past the police tape. "I came as soon as I received the notification from my private investigators. I am Julian Vance. Oliver is my biological son."

Detective Miller blinked. "Mr. Vance? The real estate developer?"

"The same," Julian said, offering a warm, tragic smile that made my stomach turn. "My wife, Rachel, suffered a severe psychotic break three years ago and abducted my son. I have been searching the country for them ever since. I hear my poor boy was injured in an accident?"

Julian turned his gaze toward me. For a fraction of a second, his smooth expression flickered into surprise, then darkened into something cold and menacing.

"Nora Ellison," Julian murmured, his voice like velvet over gravel. "What an extraordinary coincidence."
