Chapter 7 - The Unlikely Ally

We brought Rachel into the bathroom, where I used the house’s medical kit to clean and bandage a deep graze on her forearm—a bullet wound, Marcus explained, sustained when he ambushed Julian’s enforcers at a safehouse outside city limits.
While Oliver slept soundly on the living room sofa, completely exhausted now that his mother was beside him, the three of us sat around the kitchen island under the dim yellow light.
"How did you know where we were?" I asked Marcus, handing him a mug of black coffee.
"I’ve been tracking Rachel for six months," Marcus admitted, looking at his hands. "Not for Julian. To protect her from him. Ten years ago, when I realized my brother was laundering money through offshore shell accounts and using illegal muscle to crush competitors, I walked away. But six months ago, my old contacts in the city building inspector’s office told me Julian was scrambling to cover up concrete structural failures on the new bridge."
Rachel set her coffee cup down, her bandaged arm trembling. "Julian knew I had copies of the original engineering reports. He’s been hunting us ever since."
"Why didn't you go to the police three years ago, Rachel?" I asked gently, touching her hand. "Why did you run?"
Rachel looked down, tears brimming in her eyes. "Because Julian owns half the police department, Nora! The police chief is on his payroll! Twelve years ago, when he ruined you, he proved to me that the system will always side with wealth and power. I was terrified. I thought if I spoke up, he would take Oliver, declare me insane, and lock me away forever."
She looked at me, her face pale and filled with profound remorse. "Nora... I am so sorry. For twelve years, I let you believe I betrayed you because I was selfish. I was a coward."
"You were nineteen years old and terrified, Rachel," I said softly, squeezing her fingers. "I forgave you the moment I saw Oliver's face in that hospital room. He has your eyes, but he has the strength you gave him."
"We don't have much time," Marcus interrupted, checking his watch. "Julian’s men realized Rachel was freed. He knows his time is running out. By tomorrow morning, Julian’s legal team will present a forged mental health commitment order to the county judge to seize Oliver and force Rachel into a private psychiatric facility in Washington state."

"Not if we hit the bank first," I said, pulling the brass key from my pocket and setting it on the marble counter. "We open the deposit box at 8:00 AM, take the flash drive directly to the FBI regional office in Portland, and crash his custody hearing before it even starts."
Marcus looked at the key, then at me, a grim smile spreading across his face. "The FBI regional director is an old friend of mine who isn't on Julian’s payroll. If we give him hard engineering data showing structural fraud on a federal bridge, Julian will be in handcuffs by noon."
