Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Kingdom
The next sixty seconds were a blur of sound, motion, and chaos.
Rachel grabbed the steel binder, while I lunged forward, tackling Julian’s arm just as he fired a shot into the concrete ceiling. The gun clattered against the floor. Julian cursed, reaching for my throat, but Rachel slammed the heavy leather binder squarely against the side of his head, sending him stumbling back into the safety deposit racks.
Marcus grabbed us both by our coats, dragging us through the closing four-inch gap of the massive steel vault door just before it sealed shut with a deafening, airtight clack.
Julian and his remaining guard were trapped inside the impenetrable, soundproof vault.
"How did you set off the vault alarm?!" I gasped, catching my breath as we sprinted toward the rear service exit where bank security guards were already swarming.
"I pulled the main fire suppression handle in the electrical room downstairs," Marcus grinned, showing us his security badge. "FPS officers and federal agents are already surrounding the building."
Ten minutes later, three black federal SUVs pulled up to the curb outside the bank, lights flashing.
Agent David Ross, the FBI regional director Marcus had contacted earlier, stepped out, surrounded by armed federal marshals.
Rachel walked up to him, handing him the black encrypted thumb drive and the leather folder containing the fraudulent bridge test reports.
"Agent Ross," Rachel said clearly, her voice steadier than I had ever heard it. "This contains complete proof of public corruption, federal wire fraud, and structural endangerment committed by Vance Development. And the chief perpetrator is currently locked inside the basement vault of this bank."
Agent Ross opened the folder, scanned the blue-stamped documents, and nodded grimly to his team. "Breach the vault. Take Julian Vance into federal custody."
Two hours later, at the federal courthouse, the news broke across every local and national network.

The police chief who had protected him was placed under suspension pending an internal affairs investigation. The custody petition against Oliver was dismissed with prejudice by a federal judge, and full, unencumbered legal custody was awarded to Rachel Vance.
