We decided not to return to the cold, impersonal world of corporate data analysis or the noisy streets of the city. Using a portion of my savings and the money Rachel was awarded through victim restitution funds, we bought a beautiful, historic home nestled on a cliffside overlooking the ocean near Cannon Beach, Oregon.
The house had high ceilings, large glass windows that flooded every room with natural sunlight, and a sprawling garden that sloped gently down toward the sandy shore.
Rachel converted the sunroom into a painting studio. Her new canvases were no longer dark or brooding; they were filled with sweeping vistas of golden sunrises, azure waves, and portraits of Oliver playing in the surf.
