Chapter 5 - Blood on the Snow

The wind bit through Claire's coat like a razor blade as she chased the massive black silhouette of the mastiff through the drifting snow.
Ranger moved with a desperate, frantic energy, ignoring the stiffness in his injured rear leg as he tore across the lawn toward the old greenhouse near the property's eastern perimeter.
The greenhouse was an antique structure of iron and glass, usually kept locked at night to protect Vincent’s prized orchids and botanical collection.
Tonight, the double glass doors were shattered.
Jagged shards of glass glittered in the snow, reflecting the amber glow of the security lights overhead.
Ranger didn't hesitate. He launched himself through the broken doorway.
"Ranger, wait!" Claire screamed, slipping on the icy path as she hurried after him.
She reached the shattered doorway, breathless and shaking, pushing her way inside the steamy, humid interior of the greenhouse. The air smelled thick of wet earth, crushed hibiscus leaves, and iron.
Fresh, dark blood stained the white gravel pathway between the rows of tropical ferns.
"Boss!"
A sharp, agonized groan came from the far corner of the greenhouse, near the large stone water basin where Ranger had been tied up weeks ago.
Claire’s blood ran cold.
She pushed past a dense thicket of palm fronds and stopped dead in her tracks.
Vincent Calloway lay crumpled on the wet stone floor, his dark suit jacket soaked through with blood spreading rapidly across his white shirt. His face was pale, his eyes half-closed, but his right hand was still tightly clamped around the grip of a suppressed 9mm pistol resting on the ground beside him.
Standing over him, holding a heavy steel pipe pulled from the greenhouse irrigation framework, was one of Sal Marcone’s top enforcers—a hulking brute known on the streets as "Big Mike."
"Well, well, well," Big Mike snarled, turning around with a wicked grin as he spotted Claire standing in the doorway. "Looks like the housemaid came out to join the party."
Vincent’s eyes snapped open. Even bleeding out on the floor, a terrifying fury flashed through his dark gaze.
"Get... out..." Vincent choked out, his voice raspy as he tried to raise his pistol.
Big Mike kicked the gun across the gravel with his boot, laughing darkly. "Save your breath, Calloway. Your little empire just imploded. Marcone sends his regards."
Big Mike raised the heavy steel pipe high above his head, stepping toward Vincent to deliver the final, fatal blow.
Claire didn't scream.
Primal, ferocious instinct took over.
Before Big Mike could bring the pipe down, a 150-pound wall of solid muscle and black fur slammed into his side with the force of a freight train.
Crunch!
Ranger hit the enforcer square in the ribs, sending the heavy man crashing backward into a display of ceramic planters. Shards of pottery exploded across the floor.
Big Mike shrieked in terror as the mastiff pinned him to the earth, snapping jaws inches from his throat. The steel pipe flew from the enforcer's hand, clattering against the stone water basin.
"Get this damn dog off me! Get him off me!" Big Mike screamed, thrashing wildly beneath the mastiff's immense weight.
Claire didn't hesitate. She rushed past them, dropping to her knees beside Vincent.
"Mr. Calloway!" she cried, pressing her hands against the wound on his chest, trying desperately to stem the flow of blood. "Look at me. Stay with me!"
Vincent’s eyelids fluttered. He looked up at her through a haze of pain, his hand weakly catching her wrist.
"Claire..." he whispered, his voice barely audible over the howling wind outside. "The... the phone... in my pocket..."
Claire jammed her trembling hand into his blood-soaked coat pocket, pulling out his encrypted satellite phone.

"Who do I call?" she asked, tears blurring her vision.
"Marcus..." Vincent breathed, his eyes rolling back. "Tell him... greenhouse... code red..."
