Chapter 8 - The Price of Loyalty

The spring thaw arrived in Chicago with torrential rains that washed away the remnants of winter, leaving the sprawling lawns of the Calloway estate a vibrant, emerald green.

The transformation within the main house was complete.

Claire no longer wore the standard gray uniform of a live-in housekeeper. As Vincent’s executive assistant and the de facto manager of the estate, she moved through the high-vaulted corridors with confidence and grace. The lingering fear that had defined her first months in the mansion had melted away, replaced by a quiet, unshakeable strength.

And Maddie? Maddie was the undisputed ruler of the property.

Every afternoon after kindergarten, the little girl could be found sitting on the sunny stone patio behind the East Wing, reading picture books aloud to Ranger, who lay stretched out beside her like a massive black rug, his ears twitching lazily with every word.

Inside the third-floor study, Vincent stood at his desk, reviewing the quarterly logistics reports for the O'Hare shipping hubs. The syndicate had expanded its legitimate holdings by forty percent over the past three months, absorbing the remnants of Marcone’s empire into a clean, impenetrable corporate structure.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

"Come in," Vincent called out without looking up.

The door opened, and Claire walked in, holding a leather-bound folio containing the architectural drafts for the new botanical greenhouse they were building to replace the one destroyed in the winter attack.

She wore a tailored navy blue dress that accentuated her poise, her dark hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders.

Vincent set his pen down, leaning back in his leather chair as he watched her cross the room.

"The contractors sent over the final cost estimates for the glass panels," Claire said, setting the folio on his desk. "They're slightly under budget."

"Good," Vincent murmured, his dark eyes lingering on her face. "Tell them to upgrade the reinforcement frames. I don't want a stray branch—or a stray enforcer—ever breaking through that glass again."

Claire smiled faintly, resting her hands on the edge of the desk. "You're still paranoid about security."

"Caution is why I'm alive to look at these blueprints," Vincent replied smoothly. He stood up from his chair, walking around the desk until he stood just inches from her. The height difference was comforting now, a barrier against the world outside. "Though, I must admit, my security protocols have evolved significantly since you arrived."

Claire’s heart skipped a beat, a familiar warmth spreading through her chest. "Is that a compliment, Mr. Calloway?"

"Vincent," he corrected softly, reaching out to gently tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear. His fingers brushed against her cheek, warm and deliberate. "We stopped using last names three months ago."

She leaned slightly into his touch, a quiet sigh escaping her lips. "It still feels like a dream sometimes. The fear... the Detroit debt... it feels like it happened to a completely different person."

"That person doesn't exist anymore," Vincent said, his voice dropping to a low, intense register. "You're safe here, Claire. You and Maddie. No one will ever touch you again. I swear it on my life."

"I know," she whispered, looking up into his dark, unwavering eyes. "I stopped being afraid the night you stood up in that greenhouse."

Vincent smiled—a rare, unguarded smile that transformed his stern features into something breathtaking.

"Come on," he said, offering her his arm. "Let's go check on the tyrant of the patio. If we don't bring him a bowl of fresh water soon, Maddie is going to try to feed him her peanut butter sandwich."

Claire laughed, slipping her arm through his.
