Chapter 6 - The Iron Law

Within four minutes, the quiet stillness of the Calloway estate was shattered by the screech of tires and the flashing red-and-blue strobes of three armored SUVs tearing across the service road.
Marcus Vance and six tactical guards burst into the greenhouse like a localized hurricane.
Big Mike was unconscious, pinned to the earth by Ranger, who stood over him like a demonic guardian hound, growling a low, vibration-shaking warning whenever the enforcer so much as twitched.
"Secure the perimeter!" Marcus roared, his eyes locking onto the scene in front of him. When he saw Vincent bleeding on the floor with Claire kneeling beside him, the color drained completely from his face.
"Boss!" Marcus dropped to his knees on the opposite side of Vincent, ripping open his medical kit. "Get Dr. Brooks down here now! Move!"
Two guards dragged the unconscious enforcer out into the snow by his ankles, while Marcus applied a pressure bandage directly to Vincent’s chest wound.
"He took a bullet beneath the vest," Claire said, her voice shaking uncontrollably as her hands were covered in Vincent's blood. "He was ambushed."
"Dr. Brooks is five minutes away," Marcus said, working with terrifying, practiced efficiency. He looked up at Claire, his sharp eyes softening with profound gratitude. "If you and the dog hadn't come out here... he would be dead."
Ten minutes later, Vincent was transferred onto a stretcher and rushed toward the private medical suite in the basement of the main house, where a fully equipped trauma room awaited him.
Claire sat on a bench outside the medical suite, staring at her blood-stained hands, shivering from the cold and the adrenaline crash.
The heavy oak door swung open, and Marcus stepped out into the hallway, wiping his brow with a handkerchief.
"How is he?" Claire asked immediately, standing up.
"Dr. Brooks got the bullet out," Marcus said, letting out a long breath. "It missed his lung by half an inch. He's stable, but he's going to be out of commission for a week."
Claire closed her eyes, sagging against the wall in sheer relief.
"Where is Sal Marcone?" she asked quietly.
Marcus’s expression hardened into a mask of pure, lethal ice.
"Sal Marcone made his last mistake tonight," Marcus said softly. "By dawn, every warehouse, shipping hub, and safehouse belonging to the North Side crew will be seized by our men. Marcone is already on a private flight to South America—or at least, he thinks he is. Our intercept team is waiting for him at the airstrip in Gary."
He looked directly at Claire, stepping closer.

"You saved his life tonight, Claire. In our world, that creates a debt that can never be repaid. From this moment on, you and Maddie are under the personal, unbreakable protection of the Calloway family. Anyone who touches you answers to me. And anyone who crosses you answers to the Boss."
Claire nodded slowly, the terrifying reality of the world she lived in finally settling deep into her bones. She wasn't just a housekeeper anymore. She was tied to the mafia boss by a bond of blood and survival.
