Chapter 7 - The Circle of Treason

The face captured in the fleeting reflection wasn't Captain Vance. It wasn't any of the male guards who had been subjected to Warden Cardenas's performative internal audits.
It was Dr. Michael Herrera.
Ximena felt the ground drop out from beneath her feet. The man she had worked alongside for eight years, the doctor who had sat in the infirmary looking weary and broken by the tragedy of these pregnancies, was the predator walking the halls in the dead of night.
"He had access to the entire facility," Ximena whispered, her voice cracking as tears of betrayal and rage filled her eyes. "He has a medical pass that allows him to move between blocks without an armed escort during administrative lockdowns if there's a medical emergency. He was using the janitorial cart to smuggle his equipment and bypass the physical checkpoints."
"But he couldn't have manipulated the digital servers on his own," Evelyn said, her mind working furiously as the data download progress bar hit eighty percent. "He doesn't have the administrative master codes to upload the digital video loops to the central mainframe. Michael Herrera is the physical perpetrator, Ximena... but Warden Cardenas is the one managing the digital cloaking device. They are running this operation together."
Suddenly, the console screen flashed red. A loud, rhythmic alarm began to blare from the server racks, the lights in the vault shifting from green to a menacing, flashing amber.
SYSTEM ALERT: UNAUTHORIZED DATA EXTRAPOLATION DETECTED. ADMINISTRATIVE LOCKDOWN INITIATED.
"Miller didn't hold," Evelyn said grimly, ripping her external hard drive out of the console port just as the data transfer hit one hundred percent. "We need to go. Now."
They sprinted to the vault door, but before they could reach it, the heavy steel panel slid shut with a definitive, mechanical thud. The electronic keypad on the inside went completely dead, its screen display flashing a single, chilling word: LOCKED.
Through the small, reinforced glass viewport of the vault door, the figure of Warden Patricia Cardenas appeared in the hallway, flanked by Captain Vance and three heavily armed tactical guards. Cardenas looked through the glass at Evelyn and Ximena, her expression entirely devoid of humanity.
She reached for the wall-mounted intercom next to the door. Her voice came through the vault speaker, cold, clear, and dripping with an absolute, terrifying finality.
"Dr. Reed, Nurse Martinez," Cardenas said. "You have committed a severe breach of federal national security protocol by entering a classified data containment zone during an institutional lockdown. Under the emergency provisions of the Patriot Act and the Bureau of Prisons special administrative measures, you are being detained indefinitely as a threat to the safety of this facility."
"Warden!" Evelyn yelled, stepping up to the glass, holding up the encrypted hard drive. "The data is already mirrored to an external cloud server outside this facility! The moment my team doesn't receive my check-in signal at noon, this entire drive is automatically forwarded to the Department of Justice and the federal prosecutors! You can't bury this!"
Cardenas smiled—a slow, terrifying expression of absolute confidence. "Your team won't receive a signal, Dr. Reed, because the basement of this facility is equipped with a military-grade cellular and radio jamming field. And as for your cloud server... by the time anyone looks for that data, a catastrophic electrical fire in this basement will have destroyed the servers, the physical files, and... unfortunately... the two rogue individuals who caused the malfunction. Captain Vance, initiate the secondary containment protocol."
Vance stepped forward, his hand reaching for the manual environmental controls of the server vault. With a cold grin, he turned the master valve that controlled the fire-suppression system inside the room.

Inside the vault, the ventilation shafts instantly slammed shut. A heavy, chemical-scented gas began to hiss from the ceiling vents—a concentrated carbon dioxide suppression agent designed to extinguish electrical fires by displacing all oxygen in the room within three minutes.
Ximena dropped to her knees as the air grew instantly thin, her lungs burning as she looked up at the flashing amber lights. They were trapped in a steel box, and the monsters had just turned off the air.
