Chapter 8 - The Fire Suppression

The air in the server vault turned ice-cold as the carbon dioxide gas rapidly filled the space, sinking toward the floor like a heavy, invisible blanket. Evelyn dropped to her knees beside Ximena, her vision already beginning to blur at the edges as her brain starved for oxygen.
"Evelyn... the server racks," Ximena gasped, her voice nothing more than a faint whisper. She pointed toward the back of the room, where the massive climate-control cooling vents were located. "The cooling system... it pulls air from the external intake on the roof... to keep the processors from melting. It has an independent... airflow line."
Evelyn understood instantly. She dragged her body across the linoleum floor, fighting the overwhelming lethargy pulling at her limbs. She reached the base of the primary server rack, where a thick, reinforced aluminum grate was bolted to the floor, venting a steady stream of crisp, outside air directly onto the main processing core.
Using the heavy metal edge of her briefcase, Evelyn slammed it against the latch of the ventilation grate with all the remaining strength in her body. The metal groaned, the bolts shearing off under the desperate force of the impact. The grate popped free, revealing a narrow, pressurized shaft of pure, cold outside air.
"Ximena! Here!" Evelyn yelled, pulling Ximena toward the opening.
They pressed their faces against the intake shaft, inhaling deep, ragged breaths of the freezing winter air rushing down from the roof. The pure oxygen cut through the lethargy, clearing their minds even as the rest of the room filled with the lethal concentration of suppression gas. They were alive, but they were still trapped inside a steel tomb while the executioners waited on the other side of the glass.
Outside the vault, Captain Vance watched the monitoring console. The oxygen levels inside the room had officially dropped to zero percent on the digital display.
"It’s done, Warden," Vance said, turning to Cardenas. "The atmosphere inside is completely lethal. We can leave the vault sealed for another twenty minutes to ensure complete compliance, then initiate the clean air purge before the fire marshal arrives to investigate the 'accidental short circuit' in the server array."
Cardenas nodded, her face an unreadable mask of clinical satisfaction. "Make sure Dr. Herrera is ready to clear the medical records. He needs to replace the prenatal charts with documentation indicating a severe outbreak of a rare, infectious viral strain. That will explain the isolation of the inmates and the presence of the medical auditors."
"Understood," Vance said, turning to lead the tactical guards back up the stairwell.
But as they reached the main security door of the basement level, the building's primary alarm system suddenly changed tones. The flashing amber lights shifted into a violent, pulsing blue, and the automated public address system began to echo with a message that made Cardenas freeze in her tracks.
SYSTEM WIDE ALERT: FEDERAL ESCORT CONVOY HAS APPROACHED THE PREMISES. MAIN GATE BYPASS INITIATED VIA DISTURBANCE COMMAND OVERRIDE.

Through the high-security windows of the ground floor, the blinding glare of dozens of flashing red and blue lights illuminated the snowy night. A fleet of black armored SUVs, bearing the insignias of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General, had smashed through the outer security gates, completely surrounding the facility.
Evelyn Reed hadn't lied about her team. She had just omitted one critical detail: her automated check-in timer wasn't set for noon. It was linked to a real-time biometric monitor on her smartwatch. The moment her heart rate had spiked past a critical threshold while the cellular signal was jammed, the system had automatically flagged it as an active hostage scenario, launching a pre-staged federal tactical team that had been waiting at a nearby staging area in the city.
