Chapter 5 - The Milan Acquisition

Three weeks later, the crisp autumn air of Manhattan was replaced by the romantic, historic charm of Milan, Italy.
Avery stood on the grand marble balcony of the newly acquired Palazzo Marino, a breathtaking five-star luxury hotel located in the heart of the fashion district. Below her, cobblestone streets gleamed under the soft glow of antique streetlamps, and vintage trams rolled past high-end boutiques.
The transformation in her life over the past month had been nothing short of cinematic.
She had gone from calculating rent payments in a cramped Queens apartment to overseeing the complete operational restructuring of a legendary European luxury hotel. Her days were a whirlwind of meetings with interior designers, executive chefs, concierge staff, and local Italian dignitaries.
Yet, despite the high-stakes environment, Avery found herself thriving. Her natural intuition—the very skill that Claire Bennett had once warned her was "too noticeable"—was now her greatest professional asset. She anticipated guest complaints before they happened, streamlined the kitchen logistics, and earned the deep, unwavering respect of the Italian staff who initially viewed her as an outsider sent from New York.
“You look entirely at home here, Avery,” a deep, familiar voice murmured from behind her.
Avery turned around to see Nicholas stepping out onto the balcony, holding two small porcelain cups of espresso. He handed one to her, his fingers brushing hers briefly. He wore a tailored cashmere overcoat over a dark suit, looking completely recovered and radiating the unstoppable energy that defined his career.
“It’s a magnificent property, Mr. Marino,” Avery smiled, taking a sip of the rich, dark espresso. “The staff here has incredible passion. They just needed someone to listen to their operational bottlenecks.”
“They needed a leader who respects their craft,” Nicholas corrected softly, leaning against the stone balustrade beside her. He looked out over the Milan skyline before turning his dark eyes back to her. “And please, when we are outside the boardroom, drop the 'Mr. Marino.' It makes me sound like my father.”
Avery laughed, a bright, musical sound that blended into the evening air. “Habit dies hard, Nicholas.”
“Better,” he approved with a faint smile.
Suddenly, the heavy glass doors behind them slid open, and Elena Vance stepped out onto the balcony, looking slightly flustered—a rare expression for the hyper-competent chief of staff.
“Excuse me, sir, Avery,” Elena said, holding her tablet firmly. “We have an unexpected complication downstairs. The Italian press has caught wind of the acquisition party tonight, and a reporter from Corriere della Sera has cornered Marcus in the lobby, asking aggressive questions about our restructuring timeline and rumors of board-level opposition from your cousin, Matteo.”
Nicholas’s jaw tightened. A shadow of cold corporate fury crossed his features. His cousin Matteo Marino had been fighting the Italian expansion for months, trying to undermine Nicholas’s leadership within the family holding company.
“Matteo is trying to turn a hospitality launch into a public proxy war,” Nicholas muttered, setting his espresso cup down on the ledge with a sharp click. “Let’s go down and handle this.”
“Wait,” Avery said, placing a hand gently on his arm.
Nicholas paused, looking down at her hand. The anger in his eyes softened instantly as he met her gaze.
“How do you want to play this?” Avery asked quietly. “If you go down there swinging like a corporate raider, the press will paint this as a hostile takeover. But if you frame this as a cultural revival—a celebration of Italian heritage and local jobs—Matteo’s narrative collapses before it even starts.”

Nicholas stared at her for a long moment, awe flickering in his dark eyes. He had spent his entire life surrounded by ruthless strategists who advised him to crush his enemies with brute force. Yet here was a woman who saw the chessboard three moves ahead with pure grace.
“Lead the way, Director Cole,” Nicholas said softly, a genuine smile breaking across his face.
