Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Ambush

When Nicholas and Avery stepped off the elevator onto the grand lobby floor of Palazzo Marino, the atmosphere was electric. Flashbulbs popped from cameras, microphones were thrust forward, and a swarm of journalists surrounded Marcus and the hotel executives.

Standing near the center of the crowd, looking smug and triumphant in an expensive white linen suit, was Matteo Marino.

Matteo was Nicholas’s cousin—a man cut from the same wealthy cloth, but lacking Nicholas’s discipline, vision, and human empathy. Matteo had spent years using family influence to undermine Marino Atlantic’s European ventures.

“Ah, the prodigal CEO returns!” Matteo announced loudly in Italian, spreading his arms wide for the cameras. “Tell us, cousin, how do you plan to run a grand Italian hotel when you cannot even manage your own health? Rumor has it your collapse in New York last month was due to deep-seated operational burnout. Should the board begin preparing for a transition of power?”

The flashbulbs went crazy. Microphones pushed closer. The journalists scribbled furiously on their notepads.

Grant Keller stepped forward, his face flushed with anger, ready to physically block Matteo, but Nicholas raised a hand to stop him.

Nicholas didn't look angry. He looked entirely untouchable.

He walked slowly through the crowd of reporters, his posture immaculate, stopping just a few feet away from his cousin. Avery stood quietly to his left, her presence anchoring him completely.

“Matteo,” Nicholas said smoothly, his voice carrying clearly across the grand lobby. “You have always struggled to understand the difference between managing a business and possessing a vision.”

“You are running this company into the ground with reckless foreign acquisitions—” Matteo started, trying to interrupt.

“Allow me to introduce you to the person who actually runs our operational strategy,” Nicholas interrupted, turning smoothly and gesturing toward Avery. “This is Avery Cole, our Director of Guest Experience and Operational Quality Control. She didn't come from a wealthy banking dynasty, Matteo. She earned her place at my side because she possesses something neither you nor our nervous board members understand: the ability to see the human pulse behind every balance sheet.”

The cameras instantly pivoted from Matteo to Avery. Dozens of flashing lights illuminated her face, but she didn’t flinch. She stepped forward with absolute, breathtaking poise.

“Good evening,” Avery said in fluent, elegant Italian, addressing the press corps directly. “Mr. Matteo Marino is concerned about our transition timeline. Allow me to set the record straight. As of tonight, Palazzo Marino is not just acquiring a new corporate owner—we are investing five million euros directly into local Italian artisans, preserving three hundred local jobs, and partnering exclusively with historic regional suppliers across Lombardy.”

She turned her gaze directly toward Matteo, whose smug smile had completely vanished, replaced by a look of stunned disbelief.

“When you view a hotel merely as a financial instrument to trade, Mr. Marino, you see only numbers,” Avery continued, her voice ringing clear and strong through the marble lobby. “When you view it as a home for travelers and a sanctuary of human connection, you see a future. Marino Atlantic is investing in the future.”

A stunned silence fell over the lobby for a heartbeat.

Then, the head concierge of Palazzo Marino—an elderly, respected Italian gentleman who had worked at the hotel for forty years—began to clap.

Slowly at first, then with building enthusiasm, the entire staff of the hotel joined in. The applause rolled through the grand lobby like rolling thunder, drowning out any lingering whispers of corporate scandal.

Matteo’s face turned crimson with humiliation. He opened his mouth to retort, but realizing he had been completely outmaneuvered both strategically and publicly, he turned on his heel and stormed out through the glass doors into the Milan night.

Nicholas looked down at Avery, his dark eyes shining with a mixture of profound respect, admiration, and something far deeper that he had spent years trying to suppress.

“You just destroyed him with a smile and a microphone,” Nicholas whispered, pride evident in every syllable.

“I just told the truth,” Avery replied quietly, her heart beating a little faster as she met his gaze. “Truth is the best corporate strategy.”
