Chapter 8 - The Showdown in Briar Glen

Two days later, the iron gates of the historic Marino estate in Briar Glen, New York, swung open to admit a sleek black Mercedes SUV.
The estate was a sprawling, magnificent property surrounded by towering oak trees, manicured lawns, and an imposing stone manor built in the early twentieth century. It was the ancestral heart of the Marino family—a place filled with memories of Nicholas’s childhood, his grandfather’s early struggles, and the heavy expectations that had shaped his entire life.
Standing on the front stone steps, waiting with an arrogant, triumphant smirk on his face, was Matteo Marino. Flanking him were two corporate lawyers holding briefcases filled with foreclosure notices and legal injunctions.
As the SUV pulled up to the fountain and parked, Nicholas and Avery stepped out into the crisp American autumn air.
Matteo stepped forward, adjusting his expensive silk tie. “Well, well, well. Look who decided to show up. I thought running a multi-billion-dollar European empire would keep you too busy to care about a few old stones, cousin.”
Nicholas walked slowly toward the steps, his hands tucked casually into the pockets of his overcoat. His expression was completely unreadable—calm, collected, and dangerously cold.
“You always did overestimate the value of real estate, Matteo,” Nicholas said evenly. “You think holding a foreclosure deed on this manor gives you leverage over me?”
“It gives me ownership of the historical core of Marino Atlantic,” Matteo sneered, waving a legal document in the air. “Unless you sign over voting control of the Milan portfolio to me by sundown, I legally bulldoze this estate tomorrow morning. Every family archive, every historical ledger, every memory your grandfather left behind—gone.”
The lawyers behind Matteo nodded smugly.
Nicholas didn’t flinch. He didn’t raise his voice. He simply stopped at the base of the stone steps, looking up at his cousin with a look of profound, chilling pity.
“Go ahead,” Nicholas said.
Matteo blinked, his smug smile faltering for a fraction of a second. “What?”
“Demolish it,” Nicholas repeated clearly. “Tear down the walls. Burn the archives to the ground. Sell the land to a commercial developer for all I care.”
“You’re bluffing!” Matteo shouted, his voice cracking with sudden panic. “This place is your legacy! Your grandfather built this with his bare hands!”
“My grandfather built a philosophy of hard work, resilience, and human integrity,” Nicholas said, his voice ringing across the expansive lawn with absolute authority. “He didn't build a museum of stones and mortar for insecure cowards to hide behind. A legacy isn't inherited, Matteo. It is built every single day through the choices we make.”
Nicholas turned slightly, offering his hand to Avery, who stepped up beside him on the stone steps, her posture radiant and unyielding.
“You think you can blackmail me by threatening my past?” Nicholas continued, stepping closer to his cousin until Matteo was forced to back up a step. “You forget—I don't live in the past anymore. My home is wherever I am building my future.”
Before Matteo could stammer out a response, the sound of heavy vehicle engines echoed from down the long driveway.
A fleet of three large federal and state historical preservation trucks pulled up behind Matteo’s cars. Out stepped a team of state inspectors and heritage attorneys led by the New York State Director of Cultural Preservation.
“Mr. Marino?” the lead inspector called out, walking directly toward Nicholas with a warm smile.
“Director Vance,” Nicholas nodded in greeting.
“We’ve completed our expedited review of the Briar Glen estate,” the director announced loudly, pulling a signed state decree from his leather folio. “Based on the historical architectural significance and a formal petition filed yesterday by Marino Atlantic Holdings, this entire property has been officially designated a protected State Historical Landmark. Any attempt to demolish, alter, or foreclose on these structures is strictly prohibited by federal and state law.”
Matteo’s face turned the color of chalk. He stared at the legal decree in absolute horror. “No... no, that’s impossible! You can't just grant landmark status overnight!”
“When you have the right legal team, and when your foundation is built on actual community value rather than petty extortion, anything is possible,” Nicholas said coldly.
He turned his back on his cousin entirely, dismissing him with the definitive finality of a king banishing a traitor.
“Security,” Nicholas commanded. “Escort Mr. Marino off the property. Permanently.”

As state marshals and security personnel stepped forward to escort a screaming, flailing Matteo down the driveway, the heavy iron gates of the Briar Glen estate closed with a solid, echoing thud.
The shadow of the past had finally been lifted.
