Chapter 2 - The Lion's Den

At 6:30 PM, the grand driveway of the Whitmore Estate in Greenwich was a glittering river of Rolls-Royces, Bentleys, and Maybachs. Hundreds of flashbulbs went off as state senators, Wall Street titans, and international heiresses stepped onto the red carpet leading into the Venetian-style ballroom.

Daniel Vance stood near the grand entrance, wearing a custom tuxedo, holding a glass of vintage champagne. Beside him stood his mother, Victoria Vance—a woman whose entire identity was built on her family's precarious standing in the second tier of Greenwich high society. Brooke Sinclair clung to Daniel’s arm, wearing a striking emerald gown, acting for all the world like the rightful lady of the house.

"Where is that girl?" Victoria sneered, adjusting her diamond necklace. "She knows how important this evening is for Vance Logistics. Richard Calloway is attending tonight. If we can secure a five-minute meeting with his acquisition team, our stock value will double by morning."

"She's probably still sulking at home," Brooke said, taking a delicate sip of her wine. "Honestly, Daniel, she has zero social awareness. A real wife would be standing here supporting your career, not making a fuss over a minor domestic matter."

"She'll be here," Daniel muttered, though he checked his gold Rolex nervously. "She took the SUV four hours ago. She left Grace with a babysitter, I assume."

"Good," Victoria snapped. "The child would only be a distraction. Make sure Elena stays in the background tonight, Daniel. We don't need Calloway’s people seeing her in those dreadful off-the-rack dresses she insists on wearing."

Just then, a sleek, custom-built black Maybach pulled up to the front entrance. It did not carry the standard valet tag. It was escorted by two black SUVs with dark tinted windows.

The valet rushed forward to open the door.

A woman stepped out onto the red carpet.

The chatter near the entrance died down slightly as heads turned. She wore a floor-length gown of liquid obsidian silk that caught the light like polished onyx. Around her neck sat a choker of rare black pearls, and her dark hair was swept up in an elegant chignon, exposing a long, graceful neck. Her posture was regal, her expression unreadable and strikingly beautiful.

It took Daniel five full seconds to realize who he was looking at.

"Elena?" he gasped, his champagne glass tilting slightly.

Victoria’s jaw dropped. "What on earth... where did she get those clothes? Is that... is that real silk?"

Brooke’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure jealousy as she stared at the black pearls—a piece of jewelry worth more than Daniel's entire annual executive salary.

I walked up the marble steps, my heels clicking softly against the stone. I did not look like the exhausted, beaten woman who had scrubbed their kitchen floors twelve hours ago. I looked like what I was born to be: an heiress to a fortune that could buy and sell the Vance family ten times over.

"You're late," Daniel stammered, stepping forward to grab my arm, but I smoothly stepped out of his reach, placing my clutch between us.

"I had business to attend to, Daniel," I said calmly.

"Business?" Victoria scoffed, regaining her composure, though her eyes darted nervously to my pearls. "What business could a woman like you possibly have? And where did you get that ridiculous jewelry? Did you rent it on Daniel's credit card?"

"I don't need Daniel's credit card, Victoria," I replied, looking down at her with a cool, detached indifference that made her face flush red. "I have never needed it."

Before Victoria could unleash a torrent of abuse, a loud murmur rippled through the massive ballroom. The string quartet stopped playing. The flashbulbs at the main staircase began firing in a frantic, blinding rhythm.

The host of the evening had arrived.

Richard Calloway walked down the grand marble staircase. At sixty-five, he moved with the effortless power of an apex predator. Behind him walked four senior vice presidents of Calloway Capital, along with William Hart, his chief legal counsel.

Daniel instantly straightened his tie, his face lighting up with pathetic, desperate ambition. "There he is. That's Calloway. Mother, come with me. We need to introduce ourselves before the crowd swarms him."

"Wait for me!" Brooke chimed in, smoothing her emerald dress. "Daniel, introduce me as your head of public relations."

I stood still, watching the three of them march toward the staircase like hungry dogs chasing a bone.
