Chapter 4 - The Public Execution

The silence in the ballroom was absolute.

Daniel looked at me, then at Richard, then back at me. "Elena... Calloway? No... no, that’s impossible. You’re Elena Miller. Your father was a middle-school teacher in Ohio—"

"Miller was my mother’s maiden name, Daniel," I said calmly, stepping beside my father. "I took it eleven years ago when I decided I wanted a life away from my family's wealth. I wanted to know if a man could love me for who I was, without a billion-dollar trust fund behind me."

I looked at him with a cold, piercing glare.

"I got my answer."

Victoria stumbled forward, her voice high-pitched and hysterical. "Elena! Sweetheart! You... you never told us! Why didn't you tell us you were a Calloway? Daniel, did you know about this? Why didn't you tell your mother?"

"He didn't know," I said. "Because every time I tried to talk to him about my past, he told me my background didn't matter because I was lucky he had rescued me from poverty."

"Elena, please," Daniel pleaded, taking a step toward me, his confidence completely shattered. "We're married! We have a family! This... this is just a misunderstanding! Whatever I did, whatever happened this morning—"

"This morning," Richard Calloway interrupted, stepping into Daniel’s path like an impenetrable wall, "you stood in your kitchen while that woman—" he pointed a sharp finger at Brooke Sinclair, who recoiled in terror "—struck my five-year-old granddaughter ten times across her face."

Gasps of horror erupted across the crowd. Several prominent Greenwich socialites looked at Brooke with absolute disgust.

"No! That's not what happened!" Brooke shrieked, her voice cracking. "The child was unruly! She ruined my dress!"

"A dress," Richard said, his tone chillingly soft. "You struck a five-year-old child over a piece of fabric."

Richard turned his head slightly toward his chief legal counsel. "William."

William Hart stepped forward, opening a thick leather portfolio.

"Mr. Vance," William said, his voice loud enough for the entire room to hear. "As of six o'clock this evening, Calloway Capital has acquired ninety-two percent of the outstanding debt notes of Vance Logistics from First New York Bank."

Daniel’s eyes widened in sheer panic. "What? You... you bought our debt?"

"We did," William continued smoothly. "And under Section 8 of your credit agreement, a change in controlling management without lender approval constitutes an immediate default. Calloway Capital is calling the full balance of forty-two million dollars. It is due by five o’clock tomorrow afternoon."

Daniel turned white as a sheet. "Forty-two million? We don't have forty-two million in cash! That will liquidate the company! It will bankrupt us!"

"Then I suggest you start liquidating," Richard said coldly. "Starting with your house, your cars, and your club memberships."

Victoria let out a strangled sob and collapsed onto a sofa behind her, while Brooke took two steps away from Daniel, realizing instantly that the wealthy life she had fought so hard to steal had just evaporated into thin air.

Daniel fell to his knees on the marble floor, looking up at me with tears streaming down his face. "Elena... please! For Grace's sake! Don't do this to us! I'm her father!"

I looked down at the man I had spent six years trying to please—a man who looked so small, so pitiful, and so utterly insignificant.

"You ceased to be her father the moment you let her bleed," I said quietly.

I turned my back on him, took my father's offered arm, and walked away as the security guards stepped forward to escort Daniel, Victoria, and Brooke out of the building.
