Chapter 6 - The Desperate Strike

For two weeks, the financial news was dominated by one story: THE COLLAPSE OF VANCE LOGISTICS.
With Calloway Capital enforcing the debt collection, Daniel’s company was systematically disassembled. His accounts were frozen, his corporate assets were auctioned off, and his high-society friends abandoned him like rats fleeing a sinking ship. Brooke Sinclair packed her bags and left Greenwich forty-eight hours after the gala, leaving Daniel to face the ruins alone.
I remained at the Bedford estate, watching Grace flourish. Her bruised face healed completely, her laughter returned to the halls, and she spent every afternoon riding her new pony, a gentle white mare named Moonlight, under Richard's watchful eye.
For the first time in my adult life, I felt safe.
However, a desperate man is a dangerous man.
On a rainy Thursday afternoon, while Richard was in Manhattan for an emergency board meeting, I was sitting in the conservatory reading a book while Grace painted at a small easel nearby.
Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the conservatory were kicked open.
Daniel stood in the doorway. He looked unkempt, his suit rumpled, his eyes bloodshot and wild. He held a heavy brass tire iron in his right hand.
"Elena!" he screamed, his voice cracking with madness.
Grace let out a terrified shriek, dropping her paintbrush and darting behind my skirt.
I stood up instantly, placing myself directly between Daniel and my daughter. "How did you get in here, Daniel?"
"The gate guard was an idiot!" Daniel laughed maniacally, taking a step toward us. "You ruined my life, Elena! You and your bastard father! I have nothing left! My mother lost her house! My accounts are empty! I am ruined!"
"You ruined yourself, Daniel," I said, my voice dangerously calm as my hand reached behind my back to press the emergency panic button installed beneath the conservatory table. "You chose to stand by while your mistress abused your child. You chose greed over your family."
"She is MY daughter!" Daniel yelled, raising the tire iron, his face twisted in rage. "I'm taking her! And if you don't call off your father's lawyers and restore my accounts, I swear to God I will take her somewhere you will never find her!"
Grace sobbed behind me, her little hands clutching my dress. "Mommy, I'm scared!"
"Stay behind me, Grace," I whispered.
Daniel lunged forward, reaching out with his free hand to grab my hair.
Before he could reach me, a loud, thunderous crash echoed through the conservatory.
The heavy oak interior doors swung open, and two massive, uniformed security guards rushed into the room. Behind them stood Richard Calloway, accompanied by William Hart and two state troopers.
"Get away from my daughter," Richard commanded, his voice like iron.
Daniel spun around, raising the tire iron defensively, but the two security guards tackled him to the floor before he could even swing. The heavy metal weapon clattered harmlessly against the marble tiles.
The state troopers stepped forward, pinning Daniel's arms behind his back and slapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"Daniel Vance," the lead trooper said coldly. "You are under arrest for aggravated breaking and entering, felony assault, and violation of a domestic protective order."
Daniel struggled against the restraints, looking at me with pure venom as he was dragged toward the door. "Elena! Please! Tell them to stop! You can't let them put me in prison!"

I looked at him, feeling no anger, no hatred, only a deep, profound pity for the hollow man he had always been.
"Goodbye, Daniel," I said softly.
