Chapter 7 - The Gathering at the Grand Hotel

Six months later.

The Blackwater Grand Hotel—the very place where Mara had been forced onto her knees in the alley—was glowing with thousands of crystal lights.

The grand ballroom was packed with the city’s elite: politicians, foreign diplomats, supreme court justices, and reformed business leaders. The city had changed. The bloody reign of the Valenti syndicate was over, replaced by the legitimate, powerhouse conglomerate led by Gabriel Valenti.

Tonight was the inauguration of the Elias Hayes Foundation—a multi-million-dollar charity created by Mara to support widows and children of workers injured or killed in the construction industry.

Mara stood on the grand balcony overlooking the ballroom, wearing an exquisite emerald-green gown that matched her eyes. Diamonds sparkled at her throat, but the true light came from within her.

Gabriel stood behind her, his arms wrapped gently around her waist, his chin resting against her shoulder. His cane was gone, his walk restored to a powerful, effortless stride.

"You look like a queen," Gabriel whispered, kissing the shell of her ear.

"I feel like a woman who finally woke up from a nightmare," Mara replied, leaning back against his warm chest, resting her hands over his.

Down on the main floor, Emma—dressed in a lovely white party dress—was surrounded by a group of children, showing them how to build complex structures out of wooden blocks, her laughter echoing up to the balcony. Marco stood a few feet away, acting as her personal bodyguard, wearing a ridiculous party hat Emma had forced him to put on.

"Don Carmine’s final appeal was denied today," Gabriel said softly. "He will die in maximum security."

Mara took a deep breath, letting the final lingering shadow of her past drift away into the night air. "Good. Let the dead rest."

She turned in his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck, looking into the eyes of the man who had traded his crown of blood for a future with her.

"Do you remember what you told me in the safe room?" Mara asked softly.

"I told you many things, my love."

"You told me you wouldn't die until you gave me everything I deserved," Mara smiled, her thumb stroking his jaw line.

Gabriel smiled, a warm, radiant expression that transformed his harsh, scarred face into something breathtakingly handsome.

"I was wrong about that too," Gabriel whispered, bending down until his lips brushed hers. "Because giving you everything isn't a goal. It’s a promise I intend to keep every single day for the rest of my life."

As the orchestra below began to play a slow, romantic waltz, the dying mafia king took the defiant widow into his arms, dancing with her beneath the golden chandeliers, before the eyes of the whole city—a city that no longer belonged to fear, but to redemption, family, and a love forged in the heart of a snowstorm.
