Chapter 9 - The Promise at the Shore

By winter, the first light snow began to fall over the bay, dusting the high pine trees of the Valenti estate in white. But this storm was gentle—soft flakes drifting lazily down from a quiet sky, lacking the violent, freezing wrath of the blizzard from two years prior.

It was Christmas Eve.

The grand living room of the estate was filled with the warm glow of a massive fireplace. A fifteen-foot Christmas tree stood in the corner, adorned with handmade ornaments, silver ribbons, and golden lights.

Emma, now nine years old, sat on the rug near the hearth, carefully wrapping a small box in blue paper.

Greta was in the kitchen, the rich, delicious aroma of roasting meats, fresh bread, and cinnamon filling the entire house. Marco sat near the tree, struggling hilariously to untangle a string of fairy lights under Emma’s strict supervision.

"No, Uncle Marco, the green wire goes under the red one!" Emma instructed sternly, tapping his knee with a cardboard tube.

"I’ve cleared minefields in Sicily that were easier than these lights, Emma," Marco grumbled good-naturedly, making Gabriel laugh from his seat by the window.

Gabriel stood up, walking over to the fireplace where Mara was adjusting the stockings hanging from the mantle.

He slipped his arms around her waist from behind, pulling her back against his chest. She leaned into his warmth, resting her head against his shoulder.

"Are you happy, Mara?" Gabriel asked softly into her ear.

Mara looked at the glowing tree, at her laughing daughter, at the loyal friend who guarded their door, and finally at the reflection of the massive, loving man holding her in the dark glass of the window.

"I didn't know life could feel like this," Mara answered, her voice soft and thick with emotion. "For so long, I thought happiness was just something other people had in movies. I thought my job was just to survive."

Gabriel turned her in his arms, looking down into her emerald eyes. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box.

Mara gasped softly.

Gabriel opened it. Inside sat a simple, breathtaking ring—a flawless emerald set in a band of hand-carved platinum, surrounded by small, glittering diamonds that caught the firelight.

"You gave me a life, Mara," Gabriel said, his deep voice trembling slightly with raw emotion. "You brought me out of the cold. You saved my soul when I was ready to bleed out on a concrete floor. Will you make me the happiest man alive and officially become my wife?"

Behind them, the room went completely quiet.

Emma dropped her wrapping paper. Marco froze with the lights in his hand.

Mara looked at the ring, then at Gabriel’s nervous, hopeful face—the formidable mob king humbled by love.

Tears of pure joy spilled over Mara’s eyelashes, shining like diamonds in the firelight.

"Yes," Mara sobbed happily, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Gabriel! A thousand times yes!"

Gabriel lifted her off her feet, swinging her around in a circle as he kissed her deeply, the warmth of their love filling every corner of the grand room.

Emma cheered, leaping up from the rug and throwing her arms around both of their legs. "WE’RE A REAL FAMILY!"

Marco set the lights down, wiped a tiny tear from his rough eye, and raised a glass of wine from the table. "To the King and his Queen!"

"To our family," Gabriel corrected, holding Mara tight with one arm and pulling Emma up into his other arm, holding them both close against his chest as the snow fell softly outside the warm windows.
